Biography

Hans Ulli Leüenberger was christened on 20 July 1710. His parents were listed as Hans Leüenberger und Elsbeth Burckhalter [1]
Place of origin (Heimatort): Rüderswil, Bern.

Johannes Leuenberger was born about 1710 in Bern Canton, Switzerland. He was Mennonite/Anabaptist.

Johannes is among the passengers arriving in Philadelphia on board the Ship Billinder Oliver, Samuel Merchant, Master, from South Carolina, 26 August 1735. "Eighteen Switzers, who, with their Families, making in all forty five Persons, were imported here."[2]. The list includes Johannes, age 25, as well as other family members. See his father's profile for more information.

As he adapted to life in the new world, he started being known by his Americanized name, John Lionberger.

In 1745, John Lionberger sold land in Lancaster Co., to Samuel Jackson.[3]

Also in 1745, on 16 Nov. in Berks County, Pennsylvania, a John Leinberger, presumably this John's father, was reported to have been scalped and was buried.

In 1749, John and Peter were deeded 1,100 acres on Little Hawksbill Creek near present day Luray, Virginia[4]. John was about 39. Peter was about 22. John died on or near that land in 1757.

As John Lionberger, he wrote his will 26 Nov 1756 in then-Frederick County. In it he named wife Barbara, still living; sons John, David, and Peter, all under age; his mother, unnamed, still living; sister Ann; and daughters Elizabeth, Magdalena, Mary, Barbara, and Ann, all apparently unmarried. It was proved 7 Jun 1757.[5].

Spelling of Last Name

John's descendants spelled their last name "Lionberger", as opposed to "Linebarger" or "Lineberger". Unlike his younger brothers, John may have pronounced his name with what sounded like an extra syllable to English speakers, whereas his younger brothers (one of whom was born in America) may not have had as thick an accent.

Research Note

No christening of Johannes Leuenberger not found in the church records of Schwarzenburg (parish of Wahlern).

Reasearch notes included conflicting death locations. Hawksbill, Frederick County vs. Dunmore (now Page) County. At the time of his death in 1757 present day Page County was part of Frederick County. Dunmore County was not formed until 1772 and then renamed Shenandoah in 1778. Page County was not formed until 1831.
