Barent Baltus was the progenitor of the Van Kleeck family in America and Canada. As a young man from Lipstadt, in Westphalia, in the present Germany, he married in Haarlem, Province of North Holland, The Netherlands, Sara Pieters, a young woman of Haarlem. About 4 1/2 years later, 29 January 1636, Barent B., as a widower married Mayken Quiters, a young woman of Haarlem. During the period 1651 Barent brought his family to the Dutch colony of New Netherlands, Midwout/Flatbush on Western Long Island. That Barent died before 19 November 1659 is evidenced by the fact that on that date a suit was brought against his widow for payment of masters wages amounting to six guilders. From this it is inferred that Barent Baltus was in some way identified with a shipping or maritime business although no confirmation of this had been found. The origin of the name Van Kleeck is unknown. While many of the old Dutch families derive their names from towns in Holland and from which the progenitor came, this does not hold true with respect to the name Van Kleeck. The name is unknown in Holland and cannot be linked to any town, village, diocese or locality. Van Kleeck as a surname first appears at the baptism of Peter, son of Baltus Barents, at Bergen, New Jersey, October 1685, and at the burial of a daughter in 1683, the father's name is shown as Baltus Barentse Van Kleeck.
Barent Balthus j.m. van Lipstad was first married to Sara Pieters on 18 May 1631. [1] Barent was married secondly to Mayke on 29 Jan 1636. [2]
It is presumed that Barent Baltus came from Haarlem or some nearby town in North Holland, based on the marriage record of January 22, 1659, when his daughter Jannetje married Jan Guisthout Van de Linden of Brussels, which refers to her as from Haarlem. Barent had a sister, Elizabeth Baltus, who was a widow when she appeared as a witness at the baptism Barent's grandson Assidius Harberding in New York on November 18, 1688. It is possible that Barent had one more sister, Maritie Baltus.
Barent Baltus came to America with his six children, probably as a widower. His name first appears in the records of Flatbush, now part of Brooklyn, on July 8, 1654. Shortly thereafter he married Eggyn Poulos.
Barent died before November 19, 1659, for on that date, a Jacob Paen brought suit against Barent's widow for six guilders, master's pay. While this would seem to indicate that Barent Baltus had been engaged in some type of shipping or maritime business, no record has been found that bears upon such an activity. He died before his wife, for she married for the second time, Isaac Claessen.
The first use of the Van Kleeck surname seems to be October 6, 1685 in Bergen, New Jersey at the baptism of Peter Van Kleeck, grandson of Barent Baltus, the progenitor of the Van Kleeck family. On June 22, 1683 at the burial of Barent's grandchild Maeckje, the name of his son was stated as Baltus Barentsen.

These are the same and can be merged now, van der Lipstadt is the more correct LNAB, see sources at the profile, he used himself in the New Netherland.
Van Kleeck-38 and Van Kleeck-5 appear to represent the same person because: This is the oldest paternal ancestor in this chain in need of a merge. No tree conflicts. Thanks!
