Biography

Sarah was born about 1753^[1] at Benenden, Kent, England and baptised on the 3rd October 1756 at St. George, Benenden, Kent, England, the daughter of John Little and Sarah Little^[2].

On the 7th, 14th and 21st April 1782, banns of marriage were announced for Sarah and John Crittenden at St. Nicholas, Sandhurst, Kent, England, however the marriage did not proceed^[3].

On the 31st March 1785, Sarah Little, a spinster married Thomas Burt senr., a widower, at St. Nicholas, Sandhurst, Kent, England^[4].

Sarah's husband Thomas wrote his will on the 7th April 1795 naming his wife Sarah, elder son Thomas, younger son William (under the age of 21 years), daughter Philadelphia Burt, daughter Bethula? wife of Richard Carly^[5].

Sarah's husband Thomas Burt, husbandman, died aged 86 years (b. 1712) in 1798 and was buried on the 28th March 1798 at St. Nicholas, Sandhurst, Kent, England^[6].

Probate was granted on the 6th February 1795 at London, England, with Sarah being named as one of the executors^[5].

Sarah (Little), wife of Thomas Burt (husbandman) died aged 47 years in 1800 and was buried on the 28th January 1800 at St. Nicholas, Sandhurst, Kent, England^[1].

Research Notes

Sarah had a probable brother Thomas Little who was born about 1753, married Elizabeth Primmer in 1781 at St. Nicholas, Sandhurst, Kent, England. Sarah's future son in law Thomas Burt was a witness at the marriage of Thomas Little and Elizabeth Primmer (signatures of the Thomas Burt who signed the register in 1781 looks more like the Thomas who married Jane Wenham in 1776 than the one who married Sarah Little in 1785. The Thomas Burt who married Elizabeth Lynden at Rye in 1763 could not sign his name).

It is unlikely that Sarah Little was born at Shorne, Kent due to Shorne being 32 miles away on the opposite side of the county to Sandhurst. It is more likely she was born and baptised in 1756 at Benenden, Kent, England, the daughter of John and Sarah Little, who also had a son Thomas baptised in 1755 at Beneden, Kent. Beneden was just under 4 miles away from Sandhurst.
