Biography

William Livingston, draper and liberal party member of Great Yarmouth in England, left a genealogical note to his family which mentioned that John Livingston his father (and also the father of David Livingston in Australia) was born in Glamis, 12 November 1781. The parish register shows that in fact John Livage was baptised 11 November, but undoubtedly this is the same one, with the father in both cases being named as James, of Haystown. (That the surname was adapted during the lifetime of James and his children is also known from other research. See the webpage of Andrew Lancaster.)

William wrote that his father "married Mary Craig in Ireland (who afterwards settled in Glasgow) He died (or was drowned in a clay pit) 31st March 1823 was buried in Glasgow". He also named 7 children who they had in Glasgow, including himself and David:

6. David Born 1819 [A statement made by the Kinnettles session clerk and used in Australian records says he was baptised 1814, though shipping records to Australia imply a birth year of 1817. Although the shipping records imply he was born in "Kinsill" Forfarshire, his death certificate says Glasgow was his actual birthplace and also implies a birth year of 1814.]
