On 18 Apr 1862 Rufus enlisted in the Civil War, in Co. D of the 20th Regiment of the South Carolina Infantry Unit. Starting Jul 6, 1863 he was on "detached service as overseer". His rate of pay was listed at $1.50 per day[1][2]. This was until he got sick and went on furlough in Oct 1863. He was back and present for the Apr 1864 muster roll and back on overseer duty. His service ended when he mustered out in Feb 1864.
After returning from the war, Rufus lived the remainder of his days in Orangeburg, SC. It is here he passed away on 27 Jan 1901. He is buried at the Hebron Methodist Church South Cemetery in Livingston, Orangeburg County, South Carolina.
