Biography

Phoebe was born about 1883 or 1885. Phoebe Locke ... She passed away about 1933.

Per the 1910 Census: she was a washerwoman at a private household and her parents were from Germany.

PHOEBE [LOCKE] MATEER - Phoebe Kathryn Locke was born at Columbus, Nebraska, September 11, 1883, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Jacob Locke. She grew to young womanhood in Nebraska. As a young lady she moved to Corning, Iowa, with her parents.

August 3, 1901, she was married to Charley Mateer and to this union God gave nine children: John Mateer of St. Paul, Minn.; Mrs. Sarah Luoren of Chicago, Ill.; Mrs. Margaret Long, of Corning, Iowa; Mrs. Elvira Stringham of Mt. Ayr, Iowa; Jake Mateer, of Afton, Iowa, Ira Mateer of Corning, Mabel Mateer of Afton, and an infant son deceased.

She is survived by her husband and eight children and three grandchildren, Jerry Thomas Long, Robert Wesley Long, Herbert Hoover Long, deceased and Wayne Charles Stringham, deceased.

She is also survived by seven sisters and two brothers: Mrs. Dora Miller, of Corning, Iowa; Mrs. Mary Hughes of Fremont, Nebr.; Mrs. Bertha McCartney of Seattle, Wash.; Mrs. Carrie Vance of Sioux City, Iowa; Mrs. Christine Greenrod of Atlanta, Georgia; Jake Locke of Afton, Iowa, and John Locke of Prescott, Iowa.

She was raised by Christian parents and early in life joined the Presbyterian church and held that faith to the end. She was a good mother, a patient sufferer and had a great faith in prayer during these last days.

In the early hours of April 25, 1933, God kissed her body to sleep and took her soul to the Paradise of Heaven. Funeral services were held last Thursday afternoon at the late home conducted by Rev. R. J. Rutt and interment made in Greenlawn Cemetery.

Per the 1910 and 1920 Census there were other Mateer families in the neighborhood. Father - Walter, Mother - Bertha, children - Irene, Ada, Bessie and Robert.
