Benjamin Franklin "B.F." Locke was born September 12, 1803, in Rhea county, Tennessee a son of Thomas Locke and Susanna (Henry) Locke. His father was born in St Albans, Hertfordshire, England and immigrated to Rhea county, Tennessee prior to the American Revolutionary War. Meigs County was created in 1836 from Rhea County, Meigs County is named for Return Jonathan Meigs (1740-1823), a colonel in the American Revolutionary War and later an Indian agent from 1801 until his death in 1823. The county encompasses 195 square miles and is bounded on the west by the Tennessee River.

On November 19, 1840, in Meigs county, Tennessee, "B F Locke" married Mary Sharp. [1] When referred to by name, he was generally called Franklin, and many of the official documents only use his initials "B.F." On the death records for his daughter Sarah C. Benjamin died April 24, 1854 and is buried in the Sharp Cemetery in Ten Mile, Meigs county, Tennessee, next to his brother George. His Find A Grave memorial is under the name Benjamin F. Locke. There is a photograph of his headstone, however the inscription is not legible. [3]

Researcher's Notes

Franklin's family owned property and slaves. An article about a slave, Alford, who was owned by Onslow Bean's uncle, Judge Franklin Locke and was sent to Colonel Bean in 1863 to serve him in the army as hostler (person in charge of horses) and general utility man for the Colonel until Bean’s death at Marion, Va. Then, Locke became hostler and utility man for Colonel James E. Carter until the close of the war, appears here: http://www.rheaheraldnews.com/lifestyles/article_cea85afc-d1b9-11e5-bbb1-9784dc3fc0c4.html

Another slave owned by Franklin Locke is not even named on the census of 1850, but she is 38 years of age and a Mulatto (mixed race) [4]

There may be two Franklin Lockes in the same vicinity, as there is also a slave schedule for B.F. Locke in Meigs county, Tennessee for 1850, including a two year old black male (not named) [5]
