Biography

Little is known about Jane Lockhart. She seems to have been born between 1826-28 but was her birth at Paisley, Scotland, like her older siblings? Or was she born in Canada, after her parents immigrated? Can't be certain.

There is confusion between Jane (pronounced "Jean" by many Socts) and her older sister Janet, usually called Jane!

One of these sisters was listed as "Jane Locklort", a servant, in the 1850 census at Troy, New York (Ward 2), perhaps a result of the census-taker's bad handwriting. But which one of them was it?

Jane married Robert Leach, on 4 April 1853 at Lansingburgh, New York; the record showed her age as 25, his 26. The wedding service was conducted by Rev. Villeroy Reed, pastor of the 1st Presbyterian Church. No later records of Jane have been found.

An outside possibility: maybe Jane and Janet were the same person? Perhaps she married Robert Leach first; then he died and she remarried to Alex McNeill? But this scenario seems farfetched.

Another possibility: Jane maybe was from a different Lockhart family, not the same parents as Janet Lockhart? Records at this period in time are very poor, making it hard to be certain about anything.

The bottom line: can't be entirely sure of the facts regarding Jane and Janet. They still are confused, and cause confusion.

Jane's death has not been found. I'm continuing to search.
