James (Lockhart) Lockhart IXth of Lee is a member of Clan Lockhart.

James (Lockhart) Lockhart IXth of Lee was born in Scotland.

James was the son of James Lockhart[1] and Janet Hamilton.[2][3] He became 1st of Carstairs, 9th of Lee.

He married first, in 1588, Jean Agnes Drummond, daughter of Robert Drummond of Carnock.[3][4] They had issue:

  1. Elspeth Lockhart m. James Cunninghame, her cousin of Bonnington, and had issue.

He married second, Isabel Weir, daughter of James Weir of Stonebyres.[4] They had issue:

  1. James, (12th of Lee 1630) Lord Lee 1646, , (b.1596-d. 4 June 1674).
  2. Jean, m. Andrew CRAWFORD of Baidland, and had issue.
  3. Mary, m. Robert MONTGOMERIE of Macbiehill, and had issue.

He married third, Jean Auchinleck, a daughter of Sir George Auchinleck of Balmanno, a senator of the College of Justice.[5]

• 1598–In 1567, a proclamation was issued against the wearing of firearms. In 1598, James was accused of bearing and wearing pistolettes—Witnesses: Alan Lockhart and Laurence Brown.

• 1596–James got a charter for the lands of Stanebyres, Auchinleck, Gilbank, Greenrigg, Kers, etc. in Lanarkshire, dated 29 Oct 1596.

• Knighthood conferred upon him by King James VI (r:1567-1625). [DB]

• 1607–Represented the county at Parliament. Appointed one of the Lords of the Articles, a committee to carry out the King’s policies, without recourse to Parliament.

• 1607–James and his wife Jean Auchinleck got a charter, dated 18 July 1607, for the lands of Fullwood, Castlehill, Margeland, Meikle, Little Barrochers, Birkenhead, and Wester Nymphlar, in sheriffdom of Lanark.

• 1610–He was Chancellor/Chairman of the Assize, which tried English pirates.

• 1612–Charter to the lands and barony of Carstairs, Lanarkshire, dated 2 June 1612.

• 1614–Charter to he and his wife Jean Auchinleck for lands of Steadis, Lanarkshire, dated 8 Sep 1614, confirmation 1617.

• 1617–Charter to he and his wife Jean Auchinleck and their son John, for lands of Melvine and Bellstane, dated 5 Apr 1617.

• Administered justice in country district at his baron court in Lanark as Judge. James was accused by Gideon Weir, notary in Lanark, of murdering (death by drowning for stealing nine sheep) a poorman (a Lee estate tenant) under the color of the law.

• Enforced law controlling the price of boots and shoes in Lanark. (Leather for footwear was imported and subject to market manipulating importers until tanning of leather was introduced into Scotland in 1622.)

James died in 1633.[4]
