Biography

Isaac Lockhart and his brother John Thomas immigrated to the United States in 1881 as soon as the Northern Pacific RR extended west of Bismark. At first they worked as farm laborers in Cass County, Dakota Territory.

Isaac explored west to Montana where he married Albertina Englund, a twenty year old woman from Jeonkeoping, Sweden. Albertina had travelled to the U. S. by herself when she was 18 years old.

On two census returns (1900, 1910) Isaac and his family were living and working farms he rented in Cass County, ND. After 1910 the family permanently moved to Kenilworth, fifteen miles west of Big Sandy, Montana. Isaac patented a homestead - the SE 1/4 Section 34 Township 29 north of Range 10 East of the Montana Meridian on March 10, 1916. Spencer Heifort, also a descendant of John and Betsy Jane Lockhart gained the patent for the SW 1/4 beside Isaac. Spencer farmed beef cattle.

One married daughter, son-in-law and granddaughter were living with Isaac and Albertina on the farm in 1920.

When Isaac retired from farming he moved to Havre Montana where he was a postmaster and merchant. At least one of his daughters lived there with her own family. Isaac died in 1945 and is buried in Highland Cemetery, Havre.
