John Thomas Lockhart immigrated to the Dakota Territory in 1881, with his brother Isaac. On the 1885 census he was 'hired farm labour' in Wheatland Township, Cass County, ND. He and Isaac purchased a 160 acre farm in Wheatland Twp. In 1900 John, his wife and children were living on their farm. Isaac was renting a farm close by. John was doing carpentry as well as farming.
John became a naturalized citizen of the US in 1902. before 1910, John and his family moved to a house John owned in the town/city Casselton. At that time, as well as general carpentry, John was building barns.
John married Ida Ashton in Casselton in 1894. John and Ida had 5 children.
