STEELES — Earl Mansfield Lockhart, 76, of Steeles, near Hanover, passed away Friday, Oct. 20, 2006, at Duke University Hospital.
Mr. Lockhart was born Sept. 26, 1930, at Longpole, near Iaeger, a son of the late Loranzo and Genette Cline Lockhart.
He worked over 31 years in the coal mines, retiring from Robinson and Phillips Coal Co., and was a life member of the United Mine Workers of America. He was a veteran of the United States Army, having served during the Korean War. He also was a member of Bethany Regular Baptist Church at Ikes Fork and was an avid hunter and fisherman. Mansfield was a 12 1/2-year lung transplant survivor.
In addition to his parents, three brothers, John, Creed and Cecil Lockhart, preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Wanda Riffe Lockhart; three sons, Robert Mansfield Lockhart and wife, Kim, of King's Mountain, N.C., Richard Dow Lockhart of Gastonia, N.C., and Ryan Earl Lockhart and wife, Crystal, of Winfield; a brother, Shirley Lockhart of Newark, Del.; two sisters, Pearl Burdette of Iaeger and Joanne Blankenship of Rural Retreat, Va.; and two grandchildren, Erin and Randal Lockhart of King's Mountain.
Service will be 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 23, at the chapel of Fanning Funeral Home, Iaeger, with Elder Edward L. "Eddie" Cline, Elder Jack Cook, Elder Roger Walker and the Rev. Ronnie Lester officiating. Burial will follow in Riffe Cemetery, Hanover, where military graveside rites will be conducted by Sandy River American Legion Post No. 175, Bradshaw, and VFW Post No. 1144, Iaeger.
Robert, Richard, Ryan and Randal Lockhart, Grant Morris, Henry E. Riffe II and Billy Holcomb will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Roger Wimmer and Doak Handy.
Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home, where a Christian wake service will be held at 7 p.m.
