When Captain James Horatio Lockhart Sr was born on 1 April 1647, in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland,[1]
He married Margaret Burnet on 26 December 1672, in Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland, United Kingdom.[2]
They were the parents of at least 4 sons and 1 daughter. ( It is thought that James left his wife and children born in Scotland behind.)
James married Elizabeth Moss in Virginia and had four (4) children; and James married Anna Douglas and had three (3) children.
He died before 28 April 1711, in Nansemond, Virginia, British Colonial America, at the age of 64, and was buried in Nansemond, Virginia, British Colonial America.[3]
POSSIBLE:
Lt. Lockhart arrived in America in 1677 part of a regiment (1000 soldiers) of Charles II. Bacon's Rebellion. Lt. Lockhart remained in America in charge of 100 Royal Troops and was promoted to Captain. Capt. Lockhart remained in the Royal Colonial Army until his death in 1711.
Since there is no James Lockhart from Cleghorn (that we know of) to claim as our ancestor, both Bill Mundell and I are still (in 2013) floundering to find the parents of the James Lockhart from whom we descend. The search continues.

I would like to clear up a few points regarding James Horatio Lockhart. I am the 5th grt grandson of James Lockhart who was born 1/4/1647 he Married Margaret Burnet 26/12/1672 and went to America.
I live in the heart of Lockhart country ie Lanark Scotland and I have been researching the Lockharts for years, I can see the Lockhart's estate from my house and I have had many hours spent researching with the Laird of Cleghorn, Capt Richard Lockhart
First, James's mother was not Anna Elphinstone his father Robert was married twice his first wife was Anna Fleeming and they married 14.12/1661 in Edinburgh Scotland. James was their son. Robert and Anna Elphinstone did have a son James born about 1655 but he died in 1661 and he is buried in Grayfriars Graveyard Edinburgh beside his father.
After many years of research of the Lockharts I can assure you that there was never any person born in Scotland be the name of James Horatio Lockhart my own opinion is that Horatio was a nickname given to him by his troops on the way over to America and the nickname stuck.
I hope this clears up what is a mistake on most of the Lockhart trees in America
I have documentary proof of everything I say i.e. Birth, Marriage and Death certificates, also Robert Lockhart’s Wills

We know quite a lot about them but she was uncertain about the two Jameses who preceded Jacob. I recently ran across a notice that the James Lockhart who had nearby property in the Beverly Plantation had been one of the trustees in the Anglican Church (Chalkley's Court Records for Augusta Co. Va.) as opposed to the Presbyterian Church of most of the Scotch Irish. I would like to know how he might be connected with Jacob. There is a DAR record that calls them brothers but it is unclear if that is conjecture or not. I understand that Jacob, James H. Jr. and Sr were all born in Scotland and all died in Va. but have not heard from anyone what the evidence is for this or for the middle name of Horatio. Do you know more about where in Scotland they came from (or Ireland) or whether they were from the Canadian, Pennsylvania or North Carolina groups? I hope to hear more from you!
Hello all, I'm going to post what I have from the I.G.I on James Horatio Lockhart and Jacob Lockhart. This was found by entering "Jacob Lockhart" on the addendum CD at our local Family History Center. Jacob did not appear at all on the regular CD for the I.G.I. Quite a few James Lockharts came up as well as Jacob. These are all separate listings I have arranged due to same location. They are not necessarily father/ son unless specifically noted.

My note: Lady at Center says that 1722 is close enough to 1715 to be same person when one of them says "abt=about". Take note where the film #'s are the same, it indicates filmed at same location. Obviously the Margaret Burnett does not appear with the James of birthdate 1693.
For what it is worth, here is what my late Aunt had for Jacob's parents. I do not know her sources until my cousin finishes her book and can find them but she was working in the 50's and 60's before computers. However she visited relatives in Salt Lake City frequently.

These colonial papers are a collection of loose papers more closely connected by age than by any other single factor that consist largely of records kept by the clerk of the colonial council, House of Burgesses, the governor and other officials, relating to county as well as colony-wide government. The records of the colonial government have, for the most part, been destroyed by wars, fires, and early neglect. This collection of loose colonial papers is arranged in chronological order, in fifty-three folders. The collection consists of petitions to the governor or House of Burgesses, court records, orders, summonses, patents, accounts, proceedings, returns, grants, proclamations, addresses, certificates and correspondence.

Biog./Hist. Note The history of Virginia’s colonial government is divided into two significant phases by the date of May 24, 1624, when the charter of the Virginia Company of London was revoked by the crown. Prior to that date the colony had been run as a private corporation with final authority resting in the hands of the stockholders; afterwards, it was a royal colony with all the trappings and institutions of government that such a status required. The Grand Assembly, begun in 1619, evolved into the House of Burgesses by 1642, governors and lieutenant governors were sent to the colony as the king’s viceroys, regular courts were established, and a complex system of government was developed to lead and protect the growing colony.
