John Lockhart was born about 1793 in Scotland, exact date and place unknown. He married Jane (or Jean) McMillan in August 1816. They emigrated to Canada in 1821, along with their daughters, Elexis, Ann and Margaret, among a large group of settlers sent by the Lesmahagow Emigration Society. Most of these emigrants had been hand-loom weavers, who left Scotland after the collapse of the textile industry.
The wave of migrants sailed from Greenock aboard the ship "Earl of Buckinghamshire" on 2 May 1821, arrived at Québec on 16 June 1821, then made their way up the rivers to Ramsay Township, near present-day Ottawa. The settlers were allowed to go out and select their desired homestead, then return to register the location. On 31 July 1821, John Lockhart registered his chosen parcel: Concession 12, lot 4 west, near the present-day town of Almonte. The Lockhart family built a home, where a further five children were born.
John's wife, Jane McMillan, died in January, 1837, leaving him with eight children, ranging in age from 20 years to 4 years.
John Lockhart passed away on 21 Feb 1871, at Ramsay Township, Ontario. A marker at Auld Kirk Cemetery in the town of Almonte commemorates many of the early settlers, including:
John Lockhart, Senior, from Lanark, Scotland on the 'Earl of Buckinghamshire' in 1821.
The census taken in April, 1871 includes a mortality schedule, listing people who had recently died. It shows John's surname misspelled:
John Lockhert, 78, born Scotland, widowed, Church of Scotland, Ramsay, North Lanark, Ontario
Auld Kirk Cemetery 1923 Ramsay Concession 8 Almonte, Ontario, Canada K0A 1A0
