John Lockridge was born on October 20, 1762 in Big Calfpasture, Augusta, Colony of Virginia. His parents were William Lockridge (1715 - 1793) and Agnes (Gwin) Lockridge (~1740 - >1793).

His brother was Samuel Jacob Lockridge (~1765 - 1812).

John married Margaret Henderson (1762 - 1835) in 1783 in Rockbridge, Virginia, United States.

In his affidavit for a pension for his service in the Revolutionary War, dated 1 October 1832, "He states that he moved to Kentucky in the year 1782 the County of Fayette and from thence to Montgomery County & have lived here ever since."

Their children were...

  1. Robert Lockridge (1784 - 1826)
  2. Jones Henderson Lockridge (1786 - 1836)
  3. John Lochridge (~1789 - 1852)
  4. Joseph H Lochridge (1791 - 1853)
  5. Isabella Kinkead (Lockridge) Bridges (1793 - 1873)
  6. Margaret Ann (Lochridge) Bridges (1798 - 1859)
  7. Rebecca G. (Lockridge) Bridges (1799 - 1858)
  8. Elizabeth (Lockridge) Cassity (1804 - 1861)
  9. Elijah H. Lockridge (1806 - 1851)
  10. William Alexander Lockridge (1810 - 1879).

Possibly not all of his children were named in his will. His will stated, "... lastly having given all my other children not named in this will all that was intended for their shares of my estate...".[1]

One of those children not named in his will was possibly Nancy Lockridge, most likely born in Fayette County, Virginia (now Kentucky). According to his pension application, he moved to Fayette County in 1782.[9],[10] Nancy may have met her future husband John Griffin there. Or, she may have met him in the Indiana Territory when John Lockridge lived there briefly.[11]Nancy was not named specifically in his will. In fact, she might have been disinherited, and if she was, it could have been due to having a child prior to marriage.

In the 1840 census John (age 79) was in Sangamon, Illinois.[2]

John died on October 11, 1851 in Chatham, Sangamon, Illinois aged 88.

The Lochridge family is of Scottish origin. The grandfather of our subject, John Lochridge, was born in Scotland and when a child accompanied his parents to his country, the family locating in Virginia. At the early age of sixteen years he enlisted in the Colonial Army under Gen. Washington and served until the close of the war. During that time he had many narrow encounters with the Indians and often saved his life by swimming a stream and thus escaping his savage foes. He was an expert swimmer, possessed great strength, and a splendid physique, being strong and powerful, and tipping the beam at two hundred and thirty-five pounds. He became an early settler of Indiana, where he had ample opportunity for indulging his love of hunting.
John Lockridge was an early pioneer in the Indiana Territory.
He made farming his business and afterward removed to Montgomery County, Ky., where he owned four hundred acres of land. Selling out, he came to Illinois in 1835 and with his son William located land in what is now Ball Township. He became one of the well-to-do citizens of the community, was prominent in public affairs, for thirty years was an Elder in the Presbyterian Church and died at the very advanced age of ninety-four years at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Bridges.[3]
