Biography

This profile is part of the Logsdon Name Study.

Lucille Margery "Lucy" Logsdon was born in Greenwood, Pleasant Township, Johnson County, Indiana on 13 May 1908. The name she was given at birth was "Agnes Margaret Logsdon,"[1] but this was soon changed to "Lucy" and thus to "Lucille Margery," while a younger sister, born in about 1912, was named "Agnes." She was the daughter of James Edward Logsdon and Katie Irene Jaggers.[2]

Lucille's parents had moved from Kentucky to Greenwood in Johnson County, Indiana shortly after their marriage. By 1910, her father was supporting the family as a farm laborer.[3] By about 1912, when her younger sister, Agnes, was born, the family had relocated to Kentucky, where her father came to own his farm near Munfordville in Hart County by 1920.[4]

Lucille married Sanford Buell Butler on 17 Aug 1924, the same day they applied for and received their marriage license in Jeffersonville, Clark County, Indiana, where they were probably also married.[5] On their application for a marriage license, Sanford stated that this was his first marriage, yet someone informed the enumerator of the 1930 census that he had first married at age 22, which would have been in about 1904.[6]

After their marriage, Lucille and Sanford lived in Priceville, Hart County, Kentucky. They had at least seven children:

  3. Paul Hubert Butler (b. ca. 1927, Kentucky)[11][12]
  4. Edwyna Butler (b. ca. 1931, Kentucky)[13]
  5. Stanley Butler (b. ca. 1936, Hart County, Kentucky)[14]
  6. Wanda Butler (b. ca. 1938, Hart County, Kentucky)[15]
  7. Sheila Butler (b. ca. 1941?, Indiana?)

In 1930, Lucille and Sanford were renting a house for $50 a month on Dixie Highway in Priceville, Hart County, Kentucky, where Sanford owned a restaurant.[16] The restaurant's cook, Clay Hodges, lived with them[17] and they also had a farm laborer, Carl Wright, as a boarder.[18]

After the birth of their daughter, Wanda, in about 1938, Lucille and Sanford relocated to Owen Township in Clark County, Indiana, where, by 1940, Sanford owned the farm where they lived.[19]

Sanford Buell Butler died in November of 1970, at the age of 90. He was buried in the Little Flock Cemetery in Priceville, Hart County, Kentucky.[20]

Lucille Margery (Logsdon) Butler suffered a stroke in about 2000, possibly while she was living with her youngest daughter, Sheila (Butler) Allen, on the Allen farm in Star City, Van Buren Township, Pulaski County, Indiana. She died about four years later in the Pulaski Health Care Center, a nursing home in Winamac, Monroe Township, Pulaski County, Indiana, on 21 Nov 2004, at the age of 96.[21] She was buried next to Sanford, sharing his gravestone, in Little Flock Cemetery in Priceville, Hart County, Kentucky.[22]

"MUNFORDVILLE – Lucille Margery Butler, 96, formerly of Kessinger, died Nov. 21, 2004, at a Winamac, Ind., nursing home.
"The Greenwood, Ind., native was a homemaker and a member of Little Flock Baptist Church. She was a daughter of the late James Edward Logsdon and Katie Jaggers Logsdon. She was proceded in death by two sons, John Allen Butler and Stanley Lee Butler; a grandchild; a great-grandchild; and a great-great-grandchild.
"Funeral will be at 2:30 p.m. today at Sego Funeral Home, with burial in Little Flock Cemetery. Visitation is in progress at the funeral home.
"Survivors include a son, Paul Hubert Butler of Riverview, Fla.; four daughters, Shelia Allen of Star City, Ind., MaeVonna Vance of Bowling Green, Edwina Cook of Mount Washington and Wanda Lucille Rice of Sellersburg, Ind.; 25 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; and 21 great-great-grandchildren."

Research Notes

Date and Place of Birth: There are discrepancies between Lucille's application for a marriage license in Indiana in 1924, the information provided for the censuses, and that on her gravestone for her date and place of birth. The application for her marriage license links these documents as belonging to the same woman: Lucille Logsdon, daughter of James and Katie Jaggers Logsdon, who married Sanford B. Butler in Indiana in 1924. The marriage license gave her date of birth as 12 May 1904 (which would have made her 20 years old at the time of her marriage), while the censuses and the gravestone agree that she was born in 1908 (although the 1920 census suggests 1909, giving her estimated age as 11). In addition, the 1930 census stated that she was 16 at the time of her marriage in August of 1924, which would place her birth in 1908. The gravestone gives the day of her birth as 13 May, while the marriage license gave it as 12 May. The 13 May 1908 date is substantiated by Lucille's birth certificate (in the name of "Agnes Margaret Logsdon," but obviously for the child later known as Lucy or Lucille). Despite what all the censuses report (that she was born in Kentucky), her birth certificate supports the birth place information on her application for her marriage license, as well as her death certificate and her obituary: She was born in the town of Greenwood in Pleasant Township, Johnson County, Indiana.Anderson-27719 02:03, 26 March 2022 (UTC)
