Biography

DOB is estimated as 1600 based on eldest daughter Margaret's DOB of 1626. This would mean he immigrated at about age 40.

"In the third expedition, on the 'Kalmar Nyckel' and 'Charitas', 1641, came ... Mans Svensson Loom, his wife and three children."[1]

"more descendants than any other settler of New Sweden. He had nine children, fifty or more grandchildren and at least 250 great-grandchildren." [2]

Lom was the father of nine children, and "when Andreas Rudman took his census of the Wicaco congregation in 1697, thirty percent (165) of them where Lom's desdendants."[3]

Craig believed based on naming patterns that his wife, although her name is not given, was named Anna and that she was a sister of Olof and Axel Stille, sons of Peter Stille of Roslagen. His oldest daughter was born in Roslagen and his family is listed immediately below the Stille brothers on the manifest for the Charitas (his wife, two daughters, and son).

"List of the persons who sailed from here [Stockholm] to Gothenburg on the ship Charitas, May 3,1641, and from where they shall be brought over to Nova Svecia [New Sweden], namely: ...(12, 13, 14, 15, 16). Mans Svensson (Loom),35 a tailor, who has also been a lieutenant. He intends to begin agriculture in the colony. He received 5 R.D. on departing but otherwise no salary or monthly wage. Goes with his wife, two almost grown up daughters and a little son."[4]

"Nothing is yet known about Lom's personal history prior to 1641. As he came to America with the Stille brothers (Olof and Axel) it is probable that he was also from Roslagen. That was the reported birthplace of his eldest daughter. The name of his wife is not found in any surviving record. Based on Swedish naming patterns, her name was probably Anna Petersdotter and it seems likely that she was the sister of Olof and Axel Stille, sons of Peter Stille of Roslagen.[3]

Måns was one of the first settlers of present Delaware County, Pennslyvania, where he and his family lived with the Stille brothers at "Techoherassi" (present day Eddystone). In 1646 Måns Svenson Lom and Olof Stille delivered one of Governor Printz's ultimatums to the Dutch commander, Andries Hudde. [3]

Death and Legacy

Måns probably died during 1653, since he did not sign the petition of grievences to Gov. Printz on 27 July 1653. On 9 June 1654 "Måns Lom's widow" was among the "old freemen" pledging allegience to the new governor.[3]

Techoherassi, New Sweden is now Eddystone, Delaware County, Pennsylvania)

They copied the entire SCS article on him, but I couldn't see any proof that he was actually buried in that cemetery.

Lom (= Loon) sounds very much like a Swedish soldier name, so he may have received that name as a liutenant. It is generally said that soldier's names were not inherited. However, this far back in time this rule cannot always be trusted - his father MAY also have been a Lom.

I currently have no more to add to this profile. What do you think about deleting category "New Sweden" (since Forefathers is there) and one of the templates?

Heather - I started editing the wrong profile Lom-6 because it was the one on the Forefathers page. When your merge goes through handle it as you like. All I could add borrowed very heavily from Craig's article.

Svensson-2336 and Lom-6 appear to represent the same person because: research note on this shared doc said to merge Lom-6 into Svensson-2336 after PPP (CLN=Lom). I just did PPP, so I'm proposing the merge. Questions, please contact H Husted (Husted-87). Thanks!
