Biography

Research Notes

From her marriage record document her last name is "Carryer" (or spelled Carrier). Yes, there are records in Shenandoah County, Virginia with families with this last name. Her mother is Nancy Carryer. Her father's name is crossed out but it looks like Jacob. Compare the writing of his name with her husband's name, Jacob. They are the same (especially for the 'J' and the 'b' characters). Her father's name is crossed out, likely because he passed away and the recorder did not know that initially, and then crossed out his name.

So where did "Long" come from? There are later records from Ann and Jacob Drummond's kids that give Ann's last name as "Long" on some marriage records. But there is also a inscription on the gravestone for Jacob & Ann Drummond, and their daughter, Alice Drummond, that says "Grandmother Nancy Long". Jacob Carryer (Carrier) died when Ann was younger and her mother, Nancy, remarried Levi Long, thus why the confusion over Ann's maiden name from her children, and why they refer to their grandmother, Nancy Long.
