The nearest birth of a John Long to his children's birth place, within the time scale 1745-1750, is found also in Membury in 1747, to Mathew Long and Diana[1]. Another family tree reports John died in Membury in 1787.
His children's mother is registered as Susannah, and one finds a John Long marrying Susannah Hockey in Chardstock, 2 km from Membury, in 1768[2]. A Susannah Hockey is further shown as mother to Thomas Hockey, born 1764 in Chardstock (no father mentioned).
John Long, with wife Susannah, are recorded having children in Membury, Devon between 1770 and 1782:
As a first cut, we pick potential family members from the local community, here Membury Devon. Any person recorded more than 10km distant is a less probable immediate family member.
There were other Long families living in the Membury area at this time, including a Matthew Long, possibly John's brother and namesake of John's putative father. We need to find and evaluate enough evidence to declare John and Susannah as the certain parents of William Long.
Other nearby marriages of a John Long and Susannah
John Long + Susannah Godfrey, in 1774 near Exmouth, Susannah from nearby Whimple
John Long + Susana Swain in 1753 in Kilmington.
The time and distance appears to make them less likely than our original choice. Yet, without further corroboration, we might more accurately qualify this John's ancestry and marriage partner as uncertain.
A John Long and spouse Susannah are recorded as buried in Combe St. Nicholas, the residence of this John's younger son William. Perhaps relatives, the older John was born ~1735, and older Susannah was born ~1732. Chardstock is 7km from Combe St. Nicholas.

DNA
Autosomal
DNA corroborates the historical records observed; a couple with these names and dates and locations existed and are related to our documented MRCA through their children William and Joan.
William and Joan have a total of 8 present day descendants who have taken auDNA tests at testing company 'A'. The 7 discovered matches through William are WS' 4th cousins 1x or 2x removed. The most recent descendants in each lineage match WS on small segments, each match indicates, but falls short of proving, that William is an MRCA of the tested pair. Considered as a collective, however, this cumulative evidence is indicative of MRCA certainty, pending reveal of potential future triangulation results.
We compare two lineages here having common MRCA John/Susannah. The remainder are solely William's descendants and are covered in his profile.
The DNA test results, comparing WS DNA to that of cousin PM have format: total # cM / # of matching segments (if > 1). The test result is bolded if it has stand-alone significance to inheritance (>9cM in a single segment or >15cM over 2 segments - don't scratch your head - I just made these numbers up, and they likely are too lax. YMMV!)

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:
