In the 1850 Perry Township, Monroe County, Ohio Census, Richard is living with his parents and siblings.[1]

In the 1860 Benton Township Census, Richard, now 24 years old, is residing with an older woman, Marthy Melhary, age 28, and a young girl, Matildo Huffman[2], age 13. Immediately adjacent to the entry for Richard, is his parent's entry, indicating that they lived next to each other. In Levy and Keziah Long's home, an older woman, Heneretta Smith, age 56 or 86, born in Maryland, is residing. Ms. Smith is perhaps a mother or stepmother of Keziah's.[3]

On September 7 1861, Richard enlisted in the cavalry of the Union Army in Antioch, Ohio by Thomas Neal for a period of 3 years. Richard is described as age 24, height 5 feet 10 1/4 inches, grey eyes, black hair, born in Monroe County, Ohio, occupation Farmer. Richard mustered out November 28 1864 in Wheeling, West Virginia.

Richard was wounded in action September 19 1864 near Winchester, West Virginia [? It appears to be Winchester] in the leg.

Richard also furnished his own horse and horse equipment. At the time of enlistment, Richard was appoint 2nd Corporal and then on July 1 1863, Sergeant. Company C 2nd Regiment West Virginia Cavalry.

By the 1870 Benton Township Census, Richard and Mary Long are in their own home. They now have five children, with the oldest child, George age eight (estimated to be born in 1862) and their youngest child listed as Infant Long and just one month old.[4] Richard and Mary's census entry is only three entries from his parent's, Levy and Keziah Long's, indicating that they still lived close to each other. Henrietta Smith, Marthy Melhary, and the young girl, Matildo Hufman (who would now be 23) are absent from their homes.[5]

By the 1880 Census, Richard and Mary had moved to Elizabeth, Wirt County, WV. In their home, are five children, the youngest age four, and a nephew, Eugene Stewart, age 24. Some of the names of the children have changed, as in the case of Harriet to Hattie, but the ages of the children coincide, with the exception of the youngest child who is listed as four years old. The 1880 Census record for Richard and Mary indicates that Richard's father was born in Virginia and his mother was born in Pennsylvania. [6] I have seen conflicting records though, that indicate both his parents were born in Pennsylvania.

Throughout all this time, Richard Long is listed as being a farmer, and at age fifteen, was working on his father's farm[1] in Perry, Ohio.

On September 7 1861, in Antioch, Ohio, Richard enlisted in the (Union) 2nd Regiment Virginia (West Virginia) Cavalary Company C (previously L)for a term of three years and was appointed 2nd Corporal bringing his own horse and equipment. Richard is described as follows: Age 24, 5' 10 1/2", fair complexion, grey eyes, black hair, occupation of farmer, born in Monroe County, Ohio. Richard was promoted to Sergeant on July 1 1863. On September 19, 1864, Richard was shot in the leg near Winchester, Virginia. On November 28 1964, Richard mustered out of service. Records indicate he was present at Camp Remote, Point Pleasant, MD and Camp Bolles, Virginia. On August 24 1877, Richard filed an application for disability as a result of his injury. Mary filed for pension benefits on October 30 1896.[7]

In 1896, Richard died and was buried at Bethesda Baptist Church Cemetery in Palestine, Wirt County, West Virginia.

Based upon the above documents, I have determined that Richard and Mary were married between 1860 and 1862, although, to date, I have not been able to locate documentation. It is possible, that the older woman Marthy Melhary, with whom Richard was living with in 1860, is our Mary Stewart, possibly widowed. More research is needed, and at this point, this is conjecture.[8]
