Biography

1558 Birth year estimation

If he had two children in 1583, estimate his age to be about 25 at the time, which would place his birth at 1558.

The alleged birth location in Bedfordshire is not itself a big problem. Dunstable, Bedfordshire is about 13 miles from St. Albans, Hertfordshire.

1583 Sidesman at St. Albans, Hertfordshire

A John Longe, shown in the cathedral records was a sidesman [1] at St. Albans, Hertfordshire in 1583. The records show only 2 children:[2]

  • Marie, b. 1594 St. Albans; m. Richardson
  • John b. 1596 St. Albans had issue

The author states there are other Longs with records at St. Albans who appear to be the children of John the sidesman, but there are no birth records.[2]

Child: Alice Long m. Stanton
Child: Steven Long d. 1617
Child: Richard Long m. abt 1607 had issue
Child: Anne Long m. 1606 Newes
Child: Robert Long b. c. 1590; m 1614 had issue
Child: William Long of Watford, excommunicated 1599

The possible son, Robert Long, 1635 immigrant: "We know the year of his birth from his age given in 1635, but the name of his father or of his birthplace is not given, although he appears to have been a son of John Longe, a sidesman or assistant church-warden at St. Peters ... of St. Albans in 1583."[2]

He was in St. Albans as an adult, but that doesn't prevent his birth in Dunstable. I checked the map and they're about 13 miles apart. That doesn't prove anything, of course.

I think the alleged birth in Dunstable should be removed since, although the timing may be good the place is wrong. Objections?
