Levi Long was was born abt 1811 in Monongalia County, Virginia [1] of probably Levi Long senior (later records indicate that Levi was a junior.) [2] It is also possible that his father was Eliel Long or that Eliel was a brother. In addition to a Levy Long, the 1810 census cited above lists a Liel Long.
On July 30, 1827, Levi Long Jr. purchased property in Perry Township, Monroe County, Ohio. On that same day, Eliel Long also purchased property there. Some records indicate Levi Long, and some indicate Levi Long Jr. Levi would have been about 16 years old at the time, according to later census records with an estimated DOB of 1810 or 1811. (I believe that his birthday would have been around June or July, because census records indicate his age varies one year either way.) Further research is needed to determine if property sales were permitted for one so young.
Levi's future father-in-law, Richard Smith, formerly of Greene, Pennsylvania purchased land on April 1 1829, also in Perry Township. In 1830 a Levi Long was living in Green Township, Monroe County, Ohio and Richard Smith was living in Jackson Township, Monroe County, Ohio.[3] By 1832, Levi had married Keziah Smith and began a family. Their first child, Lydia was born about 1832 according to Census Records. By 1840, both families were living in Perry Township. (In 1830, both Eliel Sr. and Jr. were already living in Perry Township).
Levi and Keziah's family continued to grow. By 1850, their children ranged in age of Lydia, eighteen years old, to Levi, only one year old. Sometime between 1850 and 1860, Keziah's father, Richard Smith, passed away, and his wife, Henrietta came to live with them. Levi and Keziah's oldest son, Richard Long, moved into Richard and Henrietta Smith's home, where he remained until after the Civil War.
In the 1860's, Henrietta Smith passed away and the Long's moved to Benton Township, Monroe County, Ohio. Richard Long and his wife, Mary Stewart Long, also moved to Benton Township and were living there in 1870. Mary's parents, James and Sarah Stewart lived next door to Richard and Mary, Levi and Keziah only about three houses away.
Levi was still living in Benton Township in 1880. At this time, I don't know whether Keziah was alive. Further research is needed. Richard and Mary Long had moved to Wirt County, WV with their family by 1880.
It appears that 1890 Census records are not available (destroyed by fire in 1921 ?), but by 1900, Levi and Keziah are no longer listed in Monroe County records.
Levi was a farmer his entire life and when he purchased land in Perry Township in 1827, it was truly a wilderness. He obviously had some family close by, both Eliel Sr and Eliel Jr., so that some of the burden could be shared. Monroe County is 457.46 square miles and in 1820 had only 1820 4,645 residents, but by 1830 the number of people living there had almost doubled to 8,768.[4] Perry township is still a rural community with about 450 residents, with 86 living in the village of Antioch[5]
Keziah's family, Richard and Henrietta, were practicing Quakers, and probably, Levi Long converted. As with the Quaker practice of not having gravestones, I have been unable to locate their graves or burial site, as with Henrietta and Richard's. Henrietta and Richard are probably buried in Perry Township, while Levi and Keziah quite possibly are buried in Benton Township. Additional research is needed. X-7424 07:32, 24 August 2013 (EDT)
