M. Lem Long, long time Colfax resident, passed away Tuesday, March 20, 2007 at Kootenai Medical Center in Coeur d’Alene from heart problems. He was 81. A graveside service will be held Tuesday, March 27th at 11:00 AM at the Colfax Cemetery.

Mr. Long was born September 11, 1925 in Colfax to Charles and Mabel Neeves Long. He grew up and attended school here. Right after high school, Lem enlisted in the U.S. Army and served during World War II. He was an infantry soldier in the 1st Cavalry Division, H troop of the 12th Cavalry and fought in New Guinea, LosNegros, Leyte, Luzon and was among the second landing craft to reach mainland Japan where he served as part of the occupation forces. He was honorably discharged in 1946 and returned to Colfax. He worked for the railroad for a short time and also as a butcher for the Safeway store in Reardan, WA. He married Betty L. Phillips at Almota, WA. June 15, 1958. They made their home in Colfax and Lem started a 35 year career for the City of Colfax. He was operator of the waste water treatment plant in Colfax until retiring in the early 1990’s. He was a lifetime member of the Colfax VFW and he enjoyed woodworking. He was also an amateur weatherman and kept the weather records for the City of Colfax.

He is survived by his wife, Betty, Colfax; a daughter, Terry Hurst of Spokane and a grandson, Jason Long of Colfax. He was preceded in death by 2 sisters and 5 brothers.
