Biography

Mary was born November 15, 1858 at Brimstone in Scott County, Tennessee. Mary and her siblings were the illegitimate children of Anna Griffith and Riley Long, on October 2, 1888 Riley adopted them, so there names were changed from Griffith to Long, often the children used both last names. She married Alvison Newport on February 13, 1921 in Scott County. She passed away from myocarditis on May 27,1933 at Oneida in Scott County. Her death certificate said she died on May 27, 1933, her headstone says she died on May 28, 1933.

To the worshipful county Court of Scott county Tennessee Now in sesion Huntsville Tennessee. Your Petitioner Riley LONG would respectfully show unto the court that he is and has been for the last thirty eight a citizen of Scott Co. Tenn. where he now resides. Your petitioner would further show unto the court that he has six illegitimate children named as follows to wit. Richard GRIFFITH, aged about 32 years, Mary GRIFFITH (now Mary NEWPORT) wife of Alverson NEWPORT, Rebecca GRIFFITH (now Rebecca NEWPORT wife of Thomas NEWPORT), William GRIFFITH, aged about 22 years, Elizabeth GRIFFITH (now NEWPORT) aged about 20 years, Julia GRIFFITH aged about 18 years, all of whom was borned of the body of Anna GRIFFITH who is also a citizen of Scott County, Tennessee. Your petitioner would show unto the Court that he has no legitimate children, nor neither has he ever had any. Your petitioner would further show unto the court that he is the owner of an estate consisting of both real and personal property and that he is desirious of having your worshipful body legitimize the said parties herein before mentioned in may inherit as my true and lawful heirs. Your petitioner would show unto the court that in order that his name may not be lost after his death that he is desirous of having the maiden names of those who are feem soles changed from that of GRIFFITH to that of LONG. And the names of the others as well changed from GRIFFITH to LONG. The premisees is considered Your petitioner pray first that the parties herein before mentioned be made his true and lawful heirs in order that they may inherit his property in accordance with the laws of the of desent and distribution and in the same manner as if they there had been born unto in Lawful wedlock and second that the names of each and every of the parties herein before mentioned be changed from that of GRIFFITH to LONG, and that the maiden of these feem souls be allso changed to LONG and further &c. Rily LONG Petitioner Lindsay & Baker for Pet. State of Tennessee, Scott County. Personally appeared before me Rily LONG who after being first duly sworn states that the facts set fourth in the foregoing petition are true to the best of his knowledge, information and belief. Sworn to and subscribed Oct. 1, 1888. Rily LONG This day came Rily LONG into open Court and produced the foregoing petition which is in the words figures as follows to wit: Thereupon on motion of Petition by J.F. BAKER atty. the court is pleased to grant the prayer of said petitioner and it is therefore ordered by the court that the parties named in the petition viz Richard GRIFFITH, Mary GRIFFITH (now NEWPORT), Rebecca GRIFFITH (now NEWPORT), William GRIFFITH, Elizabeth GRIFFITH (now NEWPORT) and Julia GRIFFITH be and and they are hereby made and declared the true and lawful heirs at law of the said said petition & Rily LONG as fully and to the same extent as borned unto him in lawful wedlock and the court is further pleased to allow the aforesaid adopted heirs to change their name from that of GRIFFITH to that of LONG in obedience to the prayer of said Petitioner and it is considered by the court that the petitioner Rily LONG pay the statutory costs of one Dollar each for which Execution is awarded in favor of the clerk of this Court.
