Biography

Henry Tilmon Long was born 5 September 1875 in Union County, North Carolina, to H. T. Long and Catherine Hester Greene.[1][2][3][4][5]

He and Lydia Baucom were married on 22 November 1896 at her parent's home in New Salem township, Union County, North Carolina.[4][6]

The couple had eight children between 1897 and 1918, four boys and four girls. One child, Roy T Long (1902-1904), did not survive infancy[7] but the others lived to adulthood.[3][8][9][10]

Henry Tilmon Long died 26 September 1966 in Monroe, Union County, North Carolina. McEwen Funeral Home of Monroe made the arrangements for his burial in the cemetery at Zion Methodist Church, Union County, North Carolina.[2]

Research Notes

  • Their marriage date is indexed at Ancestry as 22 Feb 1896. The date the license was issued (13 Nov 1896) at the top of the page is very legible. The month of marriage on the certificate is difficult to read; however, it would be very unusual for them to have been married before the license was issued. Their double headstone at Zion Methodist Church has their marriage date inscribed as 22 November 1896. Their first recorded child was born in December 1897 so there was no reason to "back the date up" as sometimes happened. It is, in my opinion, a transcription error and should read 22 Nov 1896. I have recorded an alternate fact at Ancestry. McGee-1611 19:33, 14 December 2015 (EST)

  5. His WWI Draft Registration Card provided his exact date of birth which matches that on his death certificate as well as the month and year on the 1900 census and age at marriage (21) in 1896. His marriage license shows his parents as H. T. Long, deceased, and Hester Long, living, of Ark[?]. Miss Addie Long, the informant on his death certificate, listed H. T. Long and Catherine Hester Greene as his parents. Census takers tended to spell Tilmon with as Tilman but all original record found to date use the Tilmon spelling. On the two documents bearing his signature (marriage license and 1917 WWI draft registration), he signed "H T Long."
  6. On the marriage license, the groom is listed as H. T. Long of Goose Creek, 21 years old son of H. T. Long, deceased, and Hester Long, living, of Ark[?]. The bride is listed as Lydia Baucom of New Salem, 18 years old daughter of Alvis Baucom and Lydia Baucom, both living, of New Salem township.
