Biography

PFC Victor L. Long Enl Jan 10, 1950 7th Div .. 17th Reg 1st BN .. A CO

My dad, Victor grew up with name "Billie" in MO. After moving to Indiana at 17, it was then that he found out that his name was really 'Victor'. My uncle Bob still called him 'Bill'.

Then turning 18 he enlisted in the Army just before the Korean war started. He served 5 1/2 yrs, a yr and a half in combat in Korea. He was one of the survivors of the Battle on Pork Chop Hill & a POW for about a year.

He had a BIG heart and literally gave the shirt off of his back.

Victor first married Louise 'Lou' Greer during one of his 'leaves' abt 1955, Lake County, IN. She had a daughter, Linda Louise, born 10/08/56. She had Cerebral Palsy. Victor's parents adopted Linda after Vic & Lou were divorced. Victor & Lou divorced in '57. Victor then married Frankie 'Jackie' Rice in Oct 1958 in Gary, Lake, IN. Frankie was born 1937 in NC. They had five children, Billy, twins - Bobbie & Barbara 'Barbi', Bonnie "Bunny Rabbit" & Brendalee "Peanut". Frankie left him & the children. They divorced in '68. He is buried in the same garden that his parents, Cornelious and Thelma, are in, with his son, Billy, laid next to him.

Victor was born in 1931. He was born & raised in Indepedence, MO. Victor 'Billy/Bill' was 17 when he was sent to his father up in the very NW corner of Indiana.

Just after his 18th birthday (in Dec.) he enlisted in the Army in Jan 1950 & fought in the Korean war. He was a POW for about a year. He told us kids that the N. Korean's actually treated them pretty descent. But during the war he suffered some injuries. He had one scar under his chin & another in the palm of his right hand. Dad also had a metal plate in his head. He never talked much about his time in the war, but my uncle & grandparents said that he was a changed man when he returned home. He was quiet at times, but get him talking about the Bible & politics and you would get an ear full, in deep conversation.

Dad worked at the Gary Works United States Steel Corp. (USS) for closed to 30 years, at the end getting seven weeks of vacation which he would used most for the winter months, until he was force to retire after being involved in a bad car accident with my three sisters; Barb was seven months pregnant with Shane, & two neice's, Shannon, almost three & Bonnie's Christine, 20 months. Shannon received a bad hit on the back of her head needing several stiches & her poor eyes were bruised so she looked like a raccoon. Brenda, somehow, ended head down in the floor, breaking her collar bone.

Dad was injured the worse. With a broken left ankle & a crushed right hip & leg (it's a wonder why Barb wasn't hurt (she went into shock & passed out) cuz she was sitting in the middle next to dad b'cuz it was raining & the rain was dripping in thru the passenger window).

So dad spent three months in the hospital.

He passed away in 2004. [1]
