Biography

John Long II's birth date is undocumented so it is unclear exactly when he was born. Researchers cite bet 1717 in Queen Anne's Co., Maryland to 1722. His father John Long and mother Elizabeth Powell lived at "Sandy Hurst" in Queen Anne's Co. until they sold it in 1720. However, the elder John owned several other properties in Queen Anne's Co so son John II was probably born in Queen Anne's. (When the elder John Long bought the tract "The Schoolhouse" in 1728 in Kent Co. Delaware, he was described as "late of Queen Anns (sic)Co, Maryland"). [1]

John II married Ann Herrington (b. c1730 Queen Anne's, Maryland). on 12 Jul 1744 at Saint Luke's Protestant Episcopal Parish, Church Hill, Queen Anne's, Maryland. [2] [3] (1743 as marriage date is cited at Rootsweb: Thomas Flowers of Maryland.) John Long II and wife Ann lived until about 1763 in Queen Anne's County, Maryland. It is not known exactly when he and his family migrated to what was then Bedford County, Pennsylvania (later Greene County) but according to some Long genealogies they were there in the 1760's. They settled on land near Big Whiteley Creek. He is listed in the tax list of 1772-73 for Springhill Twp., Bedford Co., PA. (This part of Bedford Co. became part of Westmoreland Co. in 1773; it became part of Washington Co. in 1781; and it became part of Greene Co. in 1796.) The same John Long was in York Co in 1774. [4]

He wrote his will 12 MAY 1785 Greene Twp., Washington Co., Pennsylvania with probate on 29 March 1786. [5]

He was buried in Mount Morris Cemetery (Old), Greene County, Pennsylvania, no image of grave stone. [6]

Military Records

All 7 of John II's sons were in the Revolutionary War. [7]

  • -David, John, Eliel, and Noah served in John Guthery's Company in the Revolution.

-Gideon served under Capt. John Wilson and Col. Mackey and Broadhead.

  • - Gideon and Jeremiah were in the 8th Pennsylvania Continental Line which was encamped at Valley Forge in the terrible winter of 1777/78.

Property

  • 1752-1763 "Hopewell", Queen Anne's Co., MD Adams-16917 17 October 2015: This tract bequeathed to Ann Herrington by her father in 1752. John and wife Ann sold it in June 1763.
  • before 1771 West side of the Monongahela (Pennsylvania)
  • 1772 Springhill Twp., Bedford Co., PA
  • before 1776 Fayette Co. PA. (prior to Greene Co.)
  • 1786 Whiteley and Dunkara (sic) Creeks, Greene Co. PA. John Long did not survey or patent his land in Washington/Greene Co., but a survey map of 1786 for a plot patented in 1791 to Henson Hobbs for a tract of 212 3/4 acres, "Blackberry", shows John Long's land adjacent to and north of that tract, bordering on Thomas Flowers, and George Debolt, and near John Minor. This land was on Big Whiteley Creek and was eventually in Monongahela Twp. [In 1796 David Long and Sarah purchased part of "Blackberry" from Benjamin Maple and his wife, Catherine, for twenty pounds. It was "situate on Bigg (sic) Whiteley Creek," bordered land of John Minor, and contained twenty-seven acres and eighty-nine perches and messuages.]

[9]

  • "Mount Joy," patented at Dunkard in 1791 by John and Jeremiah Long. [Sharon MacInnes speculates that John's land in Greene Co. was "Mount Joy", but by 1791 John II had died so it would have been his sons John III and Jeremiah who died at Dunkard Creek, Greene Co.] [10]

Is it ok if I change his birth location to Queen Anne's MD? Note: He was married there. (There is a note among researchers that he spent some time in nearby Williamsville, Kent Co. DE.) His father's plantation was in QAbut near the end of his life he purchased land in Kent DE. His brother David is my line so I know about this line. Thanks

As luck would have it, Ancestry"s site has problems today...can't access data for edits...will try later.

No problem. This is turning into an awesome profile. I also found some information for Ann Herrington's father today. I can't find, as of now, the actual will online, but I did find the record number. MD archives wants $35 for a request, so I am going to keep looking.  :)

Yea, back in the olden days(few months ago) I definitely got carried away with all this and was remiss in following the procedures. I must have hundreds of docs that need editing. I told myself I would stop the searches, back up and do everything right. Since then most of my time has been creating

paper Ancestry docs for my older brother and senior family member, Jimmy. He needs some distractions from his wife's Alzheimers condition there in the horse ranch section of Severn, MD. and he seems to enjoy my work. I'll do my best to edit anything requested by you or other members as time allows. I'll hop on this request after my exercising and meds today. My overall health limits my time. Thanks for the contact...;~)

I edited this BIO profile. Please review everything to make sure it's accurate. Also, John, if you could review the images that you uploaded (They're great, by the way!), renaming them to what they are an image of, and if you have any sources/links to them, that can be added to the comment section or the source section in the BIOGRAPHY. This is exciting, isn't it? And thanks for merging this profile too. One more is still out there to be merged.
