Biography

Russell Franklin Shaw, "English Ancestry of Abraham Shaw of Dedham, Massachusetts", The Genealogist, (10 [Spring 1989]: 86-97, at 91:

“THOMAS SHAWE … married (2) Halifax 15 December 1589 ELIZABETH LONGBOTHOM, living 15 July 1624, whose parentage is not clear. Apparently on onomastic evidence alone, Threlfall concluded that Elizabeth Longbothom was a daughter of Brian Longbothom of Northowram. But in the will of one John Longbottom [sic] of Northowram there is a reference to a debt owed by “Elizabeth Shaw, sister of John Longbottom sonne of Richard Longbottom,” and the surname is a common one in Halifax Parish. Further research is required here."

Uncertain Origins

There were two Elizabeth Longbotham's born in Yorkshire. One, the daughter of Brian, in 1560.[1] The other, the daughter of Humphrey, born in 1565.[2] Neither has been identified as her father in any Shaw genealogy.[3] However, a birth year of 1560 is unlikely as that would make her 29 at the age of her first marriage, something that was highly unusual in the time period. She is being detached from Brian Longbotham and Alice Mawd.

Marriage

Elizabeth Longbotham married Thomas Shaw, on 16 December 1589 in Halifax, Yorkshire, England[4][5]

Update on Origins

In 1992, John Brooks Threlfall identified Elizabeth Longbotham as the daughter of Brian and Alice (Mawd) Longbotham; and the second wife of Thomas Shaw. [a] The following year, Lois B. Goff, agreed with Threlfall. [b] Nearly adecade later, George H. Hayward compiled a Shaw genealogy, and also cited Threlfall. [c]
