Emeline Longespée was a member of the aristocracy in British Isles.

Biography

Emeline de Longespée was the younger daughter of Stephen de Longespée, Seneschal of Gascony in 1253 and Governor of Ireland from 1258 to his death in 1260. Her mother was Emmeline de Riddlesford, Countess of Ulster, widow of Hugh de Lacy. [1]

Emeline, was co-heiress to her father and married c 1276 Maurice FitzMaurice FitzGerald as his 2nd wife

She died without Issue in 1291


Research Notes

New research indicates Emeline Longespée died without issue, and that Juliane actually was the daughter of Sir Maurice FitzMaurice's first wife, Maud de Prendergast." (Cal IPMs7 (1909): 2667, 311-313; VCH Wiltshire 9 (1910) 176. Emeline's heiress was ger great niece, Maud la Zouche, wife of Robert de Holland, Knt, 1st Lord Holand) [2]

[CIPM EI V2] 178 Emelina countess of Ulster. Writ to the sheriff of Northampton 20 July 4EI. Emelina, the wife of Maurice son of Maurice [Fitzgerald], and daughter of the said countess, aged 24 and more, and Alan, son of Roger la Zouche who had to wife Ela elder daughter of the said countess, aged 8, are her heirs. [CPR HIII] 2 September 1277 Chester. Letters for Emelina, wife of Maurice son of Maurice, going to Ireland, nominating her attorneys, named, in England.

[CPR HIII] 20 October 1286 Westminster. Emelina, late the wife of Maurice son of Maurice, staying in England, nominating Jordan de Coventre and William Foreste in Ireland for two years.

[CCR HIII] 25 July 1288 Westminster. To J. archbishop of Dublin, supplying the place of the justiciary of Ireland. Order to permit Emelina, late the wife of Maurice son of Maurice, to have administration of the goods and chattels that belonged to Maurice in Ireland, upon her finding security to answer to the king, so far as the said goods suffice, for the debts due from Maurice to the exchequer of Dublin, for which they were taken into the king's hands, if they are still in the king's hands, and if the executors of Maurice's will or his heirs or others have not found security to render the debts to the said exchequer in order to have administration of his goods and chattels.

[CCR EI] 28 April 1305 Havering. Grant by Emmeline Lungespeye, late the wife of Maurice son of Maurice son of Gerald, to Sir John Wogan, knight, of the 100/ yearly of rent that Christiana de Mariscis granted to her, to be received from the heirs of Walter de Ivythorn during Christiana's life in the tenements of Kilka and Tristeldermot, which are of Emmelina's inheritance and which revert to her after Christiana's death quit of the said rent. Witnesses: -------------. Memorandum, that Emmelina came into chancery at Westminster, on 25 April, and acknowledged the deed aforesaid. Enrolment of grant by the said Emmelina to Sir John Wogan, knight, of all her lands of Kylka and Tristeldermot, with the homages, rents, suits and services of all the free tenants and villeins and of all other tenants, with the knights' fees, advowsons of churches and religious houses, etc. For this grant John has paid her 400/. Witnesses as above. Memorandum, that Emmelina came into chancery at Westminster, on 25 April, and acknowledged the deed aforesaid. Enrolment of letters patent of John Wogan witnessing that he is bound to Lady Emmelina Lungespeye in 100/. for having the lands aforesaid in fee of her feoffment, provided that she deliver to him seisin of the said lands before the term for payment. Dated at Wambergh, 25 April, 33 Edward. Memorandum, that John came into chancery at Westminster, on 27 April, and acknowledged the aforesaid deed, and granted that the money shall be levied, in default of payment, of his lands and chattels. Enrolment of letters patent of the aforesaid Emmelina acknowledging receipt from the said John of 260/, in part payment of 400/ for the lands as above, concerning which it was agreed between them that she shall cause to be delivered to him before the quinzaine of Midsummer next seisin of all the lands and shall also deliver to him seisin of 40/ of yearly rent from the heirs of Walter de Ivythorn from the said lands during the life of Christiana de Mariscis, which rent he has granted to Emmelina during Christiana's life and which she has granted to him in form aforesaid. If by reason of her death or that of John or of any other lawful hindrance on her or his part it shall happen that John be hindered by her or any of her friends from having seisin within the said term, she grants that she, her heirs and executors, shall be bound to restore to him the 260/ aforesaid. She also grants that so soon as John shall have had seisin of the lands and rent, she will make to him by her general attorneys in Ireland and by fine to be levied between her and him all the security that he and the king's court there can devise according to the law of the land and in good faith. Dated at Wambergh, 25 April, 33 Edward. Memorandum, that Emmelina came into chancery, on 27 April, and acknowledged the deed aforesaid.

[CIPM EIII V7] 371. Emelina Longespee. Writ, 23 May, 5 Edward III. Northampton. Inquisition, 1 June, 5 Edward III. Kyngessutton. The manor (extent given), including meadow land liable to inundation by the water of the river Charewell, a fishery, and the hundred of Sutton, held for life of the heirs of the earl of Salisbury, whose inheritance is now in the hand of the earl of Warenne, by service of a sore sparrowhawk or 2s. yearly, by fine levied in the king's court in 8 Edward II, with remainder to Thomas, late earl of Lancaster, for his life, and further remainder to Robert de Holond and Maud his wife and the heirs begotten between them. The said Maud, aged 40 years, is her next heir by virtue of the fine aforesaid.

[CIPM EIII V7] 442. Emelina Longespee. Writ, 3 January, 6 Edward III. Berks. Inquisition 9 March, 7 Edward III. Denford. The manor, held for her life of the earl of Hereford, rendering 13s. 4d. yearly, with remainder to Maud, sometime the wife of Robert de Houlond, and her heirs. The said Emelina died on Whitsunday, 5 Edward III. The said Maud and Helen(Elena) her sister, both aged 40 years and more, are next heirs of the said Emelina.

Matilda, wife of Robert Holand [died 1328] and Helen her sister, were the daughters of Alan la Zouche and Ela, the sister of Emmaline. These two IPM’s confirm that Emmaline died without heirs of her body.
