Biography

Agnes (Looney) Kelley (1890-1959)

Agnes was the eighth child and fifth daughter of Janie (Casteel) and William Looney (though William had older children from a previous marriage). She was born in 1890 in Iron City, Lawrence County, Tennessee.

On 4 February 1907, Agnes married Miley Thomas Kelley in Lauderdale County, Alabama. (Note that his WWI draft record gives his name as Thomas Miley Kelley. Note also that his gravestone spells his name Milly — which is misspelled as Meley in his Find-a-Grave entry — though all other documentary sources spell it Miley.)

Agnes and Miley appear to have moved back and forth between Alabama and Tennessee multiple times, since about half of their children were born in Alabama and the rest in Tennessee. They had eight children in all:

  • Lucille R. Kelley (b. 1908 in TN) — her married name was Richards
  • Buford Leo Kelley (b. 1909 in AL)
  • Alvin R. Kelley (b. 1912 in AL)
  • Virgie Mae Kelley (b. 1914 in AL or TN) — her married name was Melson
  • A.M. Kelley (b. 1916 in TN)
  • Emma Ilene Kelley (b. 1918 in TN) — her married name was Ward
  • Miley Thomas Kelley, Jr. (b. 1923 in TN)
  • Charles Clinton Kelley (b. 1930 in AL)

[Note that according to census records Mae was born in Alabama, but according to her obituary she was born in Tennessee.]

Miley Thomas Kelley (Sr.) died in 1958 and was buried in the Knights of Pythias Cemetery in Russellville, Franklin County, Alabama.

On 11 April 1959, Agnes (Looney) Kelley died.[1] She was buried in the Knights of Pythias Cemetery in Russellville, Franklin County, Alabama, by her husband.
