Research Note

  • Although sources seem to be lacking, in his book The Genealocial and Family History of the State of Vermont Vol.1, Hon. Hiram by Carleton of Montpelier states
Thomas Lowthropp, was born in Cherry Burton, England and lived there until 1576, when he removed to Yorkshire, England, where his death occurred in 1606. He married first Elizabeth Clark, who died July 29, 1574. His second wife, Mary was buried at Eton, England, January 6 1588. He was married again to Jane ----. [7]
  • The basis for the identification of Thomas' wife as Mary Salte of Yoxall in Staffordshire seems to be the result of a confusion of identities between Thomas Lowthropp of Cherry Burton in Yorkshire and Thomas Lathropp of Leighe in Staffordshire. Although, Huntington affirms the descent of the Staffordshore Lathropp family from ancestors in Yorkshire, it is clear from his summary of the children of Thomas and Mary Salte Lathropp that she could not have been the second wife of Thomas Lowthrope of Cherry Burton [8]
