Biography

Howard was born in 1776. He is the son of Edmund Lathrop and Bettie Howard. He passed away in 1857.[1]

From A genealogical memoir of the Lo-Lathrop family, Seventh Generation, Pgs. 360, 361:

108. Howard, born in Easton, Dec. 17, 1776, and married, in 1805, Sally, daughter of Edward Williams, of Easton, who was born May 9, 1787, and died May 15, 1864. He early invested in the Keith furnace, in Pittsford, Vt., and in time became sole owner, and for twelve years he superintended the works, but sold in 1809. His father's health failing, he returned to Easton, where he remained for the rest of his life on the old homestead. He died, Aug. 23, 1857, and his widow in 1864. Mr. Lothrop was a gentleman of the old New England type, and a splendid specimen of what common school can make of a youth with good strong common sense. He had a large local influence, and was for many years a representative of the town in the State legislature, and of his district in the State senate, and also in the executive council. He was also once presidential elector, and as such voted for Daniel Webster.

From Biographical Record of Bristol County, Page 143: (Excerpted from text for Cyrus Lothrop.)

Howard Lothrop was born in Easton, where Edmund Lothrop was one of its pioneer settlers. Howard Lothrop married Sally, daughter of Edward Williams. His life was identified as a farmer, and he took an active interest in school and religious institutions. He was a member of the State Legislature from 1823 to 1827, and the next four years was State senator, and a member of the Governor's Council from 1832 to 1836. He was noted for his sterling integrity, and died in 1857. This family trace their descent from Mark Lothrop, who settled near Salem, about 1650.

From History of Rutland County, Pg. 902 (excerpted):

Howard Lothrop was son of Edmund, one of the early settlers in Easton. The family has been prominent in all the history of that town.
Mr. Howard Lothrop came to Pittsford near the close of the last century on business connected with what was then known as the Keith Iron Furnace, in which he had invested some capital. He became superintendent and greatly enlarged and developed the business, which was then an important industry of the county. In 1809 he sold the property, of which he had become the principal owner, to Gibbs & Co., and returned to Easton and there resided till his death in 1857. During his stay in Pittsford, and afterward, he acquired possession of considerable real estate. To look after this, and other interests of his father's property, Henry F. Lothrop, at twenty-four years of age, came to Pittsford and made the town his home.
