Minnie Bosworth, Last Surviving Member of Pioneer County Family, Wouldn't have missed any of 94 years
by Lucille Thomas
"I wouldn't have missed any of it," commented Mrs. Minnie Bosworth on her 94th birthday, which she celebrated Monday. The pioneer history of the county is a familiar page to Mrs. Bosworth, as her grandparents came to this area in the 1830s. One grandfather, Abraham Lotz, who settled in Madison Twp. in 1832, organized the first Sunday School in Jay County. Mrs. Bosworth, the former Minnie Lotz, was one of five children in the family of Jacob and Keturah (Winters) Lotz, and is the only surviving member. She says, "It's surprising. I was always considered the puny one of the family.
The Portland pioneer attended and spent one year at the Eastern Indiana Normal in Portland. She taught for ten years at the Greene Postoffice School Coulson Hill, Liber School for negroes, Portland and Swamp Hollow Schools. During this time, she studied for short periods at the Ridgeville College and at Lebanon, Ohio. Her desire for a college degree was never realized. She said her per month teacher's salary didn't enable her to save enough only for short terms of schooling. While teaching at the West Ward School in Portland, she was paid per month. The extra two dollars was for doing her own janitor work.
The Swamp Hollow School stands out in Mrs. Bosworth's memory due to its location. She said the site was just where the name implied, in a swamp. Often she walked the five miles from her home near Coulson Hill to the school north of Portland. One morning, after a heavy rain, she walked some distance on the second rail from the top of a rail fence. At a spot where she hade to cross the road, she picked what looked like a solid place and jumped. One foot landed on solid ground, and the other sank in the mud. She pulled her overshoe off and couldn't find it. To her knowledge the overshoe never was found.
In 1892 Minnie Lotz became the bride of Richard Bosworth and they went to houskeeping south of Liber, where the John Hardy home now stands. Their entire married life was spent on a farm with the exceptions of two years in Portland. Mrs. Bosworth moved to her present home on S. Meridian St. 16 years ago, several years after the death of her husband. Her son, Cecil, resides next door to her. For the past nine years she has been unable to see to sew or read, but has a reading machine. By means of the machine she has read hundreds of books. She likes fiction and mystery stories, and her favorite author is Milton Metz of Louisville. Mrs. Bosworth joined the Portland Friends Church when 21 years old, and has been a member of the church since that time. She has three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
