Memories of Maisie Grey: `Going To Visit Grannie Preston` On horseback Maisie would ride for an hour from her home at Pungaere to visit Grannie (Ethel Preston nee Louden). The short cut to Grannie`s was throughneighbouring private property. Grannie`s entrance to her place was atKaeo, which was a long way to travel. Riding down the Pungaere RoadMaisie would pause at a certain spot and looking overinto the distance she could see Grannie`s house nestled under the hill. Pink rambling roses covered the old wooden house and it looked beautiful when the roseswere in flower. When going to visit Grannie, Maisie would have to crossa creek. If it had been raining there was only a certain part where youcould cross. If you went a little bit to the left you wouldn`t get outbecause it was very deep. You couldn`t see the bottom. Maisie recallsvisiting Grannie and being unable to get home because the creek wasflooded due to heavy rain. Maisie was anchored on the other side. Milking the twelve cows was done by hand in the open paddock and if a cowwould walk off you would have to chase after her, so you could finish milking her. If family were staying they would help Grannie milk. Maisie remembers her Auntie Lottie helping with the milking. Grandad Prestoncould not help with the milking as he had eczema. He could not evendrink milk because every time he did, the eczema would break out again. Grannie and Grandad had a big orchard down the back of their place. Theyhad apple and lemon trees. Maisie said she would go and sit under thelemon trees and eat lemons. Grannie and Grandad did not have power.Maisie said in those days nobody had power. Grannie would cook all meals on a big open fire in camp ovens. Camp ovens are big iron pots with lids on. Maisie said that Grannie would geta good fire going with good embers. She would put the bread dough into acamp oven and cook it on the fire embers. Maisie recalls the bread beingyummy. She would make and cook bread after she got married in the coldrange, but it was never the same. Camp oven bread had a flavour all ofits own.
