Biography

Notables Project
William Lower MP is Notable.

Born about 1570 William Lower was the son of Thomas Lower of St Winnow in Cornwall and his wife, Jane Reskimer. He was educated at Exeter College, Oxford, New Inn and Middle Temple. In 1591 he was expelled from Middle Temple for riotous behaviour and although re-admitted the following year his behaviour does not seem to have improved. His interest in astronomy associated him with Thomas Harriot and Raleigh-1|Sir Walter Raleigh]].

William was first elected to Parliament as member for Bodmin in 1601. He married Dorothy Perrot, daughter of Thomas Perrot and his wife, Dorothy Devereux, who bore him a daughter, Dorothy, about 1608.

He observed Halley's comet in 1607, taking careful measurements

William died on 12 April 1615 and Dorothy gave birth to his posthumus son, Thomas around New Year.
