Martha Lucas was born in Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania county, Virginia, a daughter of Zachariah Lucas and Nancy (Brown) Lucas. She lived in the homestead of Thomas Brown, her maternal grandfather, with her maternal grandmother, Sarah Brown and her parents after her grandfather died. In 1819, after her grandmother, her mother and Martha all died, other family members took her father to court, requesting that the family homestead be sold and the money divided among the rest of the surviving heirs of Thomas Brown.
