Biography

1776 Project
Captain Barton Lucas served with 1st Maryland Regiment (1776), Continental Army during the American Revolution.
Daughters of the American Revolution
Barton Lucas is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A072189.

Captain Barton Lucas was born January 29, 1729/30 in Prince George's, Maryland, the son of Thomas and Ann Lucas. [1] Frederick County was created in 1748 by the Province of Maryland from parts of Prince George's County and Baltimore County, and is where his birth records are housed. [2]

During the American Revolutionary War, Barton Lucas served as an officer with Smallwood's Maryland Regiment. Captain Lucas is honored by the Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution as Ancestor 3A072189. According to his DAR records, Barton was twice married. The name of his first wife is not recorded, but his second wife was Priscilla Sprigg. Applications for membership in the Society have been by the descendants of his son, James Lucas, who married Mary Free. DAR records indicate that Captain Lucas died after January 6, 1785.

On January 13, 1757, Barton Lucas conveyed to his eldest brother, Thomas, the deed to two tracts of land lying in Frederick county, Maryland, called "Lucus's Adventure" of approximately 100 acres and the tract called "Thomas and Nancy" consisting of about 50 acres. Not wife's name for Barton is given on this deed, that was made "for and in consideration of good will and affection and 5 shillings sterling." Oddly enough, on February 14, 1757, Thomas conveys the same two tracts back to Barton, for the same good will and 5 shillings. Mary Lucas, wife of Thomas, waived her dower rights. Testator was John Hepburn. [3] Both of these tracts are now part of Montgomery county, Maryland, which was formed in 1776, from Frederick county.

On November 28, 1762, in Anne Arundel county, Maryland, Barton married Priscilla Sprigg. [4] Priscilla was born September 26, 1735, a daughter of Osborne Sprigg and his second wife, Rachel Belt. Priscilla died prior to October 1785. [5]

Researcher's Notes

Both Maryland Church Records and the records of the DAR give Barton's date of birth as January 29, 1729, however it is sometimes written as 1729/30 due to the Old Style Calendar: Before 1752 the year began on Lady Day, March 25th,. Dates between January 1st and March 24th were at the end of the year. Old Style (O.S.) and New Style (N.S.) are used to indicate whether the year has been adjusted. Often both dates are used. (Annabelle Kemp uses the double date in her genealogy of Barton Lucas, ancestor #10)
