Philip was born in 1797 at Kingston, Jamaica, the son of Sampson Lucas (d. 1820), a cotton trader who made his fortune in the West Indies before settling in London, England where he died in 1820.[1]
It is recorded that in June 1826 Philip owned two slaves in the Parish of Kingston, Jamaica.[2]
In 1834 Philip and Henry Micholls set up as merchants and cotton spinners (Micholls, Lucas & Co) in Brown Street, Manchester.[3]
On 31 August 1836 he married Juliana Gompertz, daughter of Benjamin Gompertz (1779-1865) and his wife Abigail Montefiore (1790-1871).[3] They had five daughters and two sons.
He died in 1865.[7]
