Carolyn Johnston was born November 10, 1924, in Oneida, Nemaha, Kansas, United States to Winfred and Mildred Russell Lucas. After graduation from Frankfort High School in 1942, she attended Stormont-Vail School of Nursing in Topeka, Shawnee, Kansas, United States and became a registered nurse in 1945.
On January 7, 1946, she married Kenneth K. Johnston in Frankfort, Marshall, Kansas, United States. They lived in Frankfort, Kansas; Bartlesville, Oklahoma; Houston, Texas; Wichita, Kansas; Grand Island, Nebraska; Lincoln, Nebraska; Newton, Kansas; and Manhattan, Kansas. She used her nursing skills in community service such as bloodmobiles and care of mentally challenged children. Her hobbies included gardening, fishing and Kansas State football. She was a member of the Manhattan Catbackers, the Order of the Eastern Star and the First Presbyterian Church.
