  • Funeral services were held Saturday, July 12, 2:00 pm at the Bedford Baptist Church for Max Lucas. The minister was Rev Ted DeHass and interment was at Fairview Cemetery.

Max LeRoy Lucas, son of Joseph LeRoy Lucas and Lena Pearle Stutesman was born at Sheridan, Missouri, on April 2, 1911, and departed this life July 9, 1986 at his home in Bedford, Iowa, at the age of 75 years, 3 months, and 7 days.

His parents were farmers in Missouri, but they moved to Taylor County, Iowa, where Max grew to maturity. He attended the rural school system and high school in Bedford. Max was a member of the First Baptist Church for over 50 years.

On October 20, 1934, he was united in marriage to Dorothy Pauline Mohler, daughter of Frank and Carrie Mohler of rural Bedford. The couple was married in the Mohler farm home. Max and Dorothy resided on a farm just north of there. To this union two sons were born, Donovan and James. In 1984 Max and Dorothy celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.

Max and Dorothy continued farming, eventually purchasing the Mohler farm where Max tilled the land and raised cattle and hogs. Max loved the challenge of farming and was an expert at all the specialties that occupation requires. He was progressive, always looking for a better way to do things.

In 1960 Max purchased the Lucas Hog Yard where he bought market swine for the packing plants. In 1963 they moved to Bedford, and he operated the hog yard until 1976 when he entered retirement. Max and Dorothy spent their retirement years traveling, especially to Florida, and made their winter home in Fort Meyers, Florida, where they have many friends.

Max was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Kenneth; one brother-in-law, Herman O'Dell; one sister-in-law Blythe; a grandson, Daniel and a great grandson, Jesse. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Dorothy; two sons and daughters-in-law, Donovan and Joyce, James and Kay; three brothers, Vane, Ronald, and Ivan; three sisters, Marie Larison, Doris O'Dell and Vadonna Price; ten grandchildren, and five great grandchildren.

Max cherished his family, including his parents, brothers and sisters, wife, sons and their families. This family entertainment was the focus of the life he loved to live.

His love and care will be greatly missed by us all.
