Biography

Luke was born in 1834 . He was the son of William Lucas and his wife Mary (Boyes). He was baptised in Stowe Nine Churches on 4th May 1834 [1] At the age of 6, on the night of the 1841 census, Luke was living with his mother, and siblings, his father was absent.[2]In the following census the 16 year old Luke was working as a labourer as was his father who was at home[3]

In 1855, at the age of 21 he married 18 year old Martha (Gudgeon?) from Weedon Beck[4] His occupation was given as labourer.

At some point, Luke must have started work in a Gas works, making gas was to be his career and that of some of his sons and a grand child, The young couple moved to a house in Mill Hill, Long Buckby where they lived for at least the following 10 years . By the 1881 census, Luke had become the manager of the Gas works. The address is in Mill Hill but the house is recorded as the house adjoining the Gas works . During this period the couple had the following children

Lucy b abt 1856
Mary Ann b abt 1858

Joseph b abt 1871

In 1891, Luke and Martha together with Edwin and Harry were living in Leicestershire where Luke was the manager of the Earl Shilton gas and light works. (his son Thomas was now managing the Long Buckby works) [8] In 1901, at 64, Lucas was still manager at the works and the two younger boys now aged,25 and 20 were still living at home, as was Annie aged 22[9]
