William Samuel Lucas was born in 1760 in Plymouth, Massachusetts, a son of Abial Lucas and Deziah (Stutivant) Lucas. Abial applied for and received 200 acres of land in Malbaie, Québec Canada. "The Lucas family of Malbay [sic] was of pioneer Gaspesian lineage and its members were widely married into other early families. [1] Abial and his sons were engaged in delivering mail from Gaspé Basin to Québec up along the St. Lawrence coast on foot. In time, William and his brother, Fitzhugh, built a ship to make the journey. William Lucas became shipmaster of the schooner "Tyral of Gaspé." [2]
