Biography

John Ludlow served in the United States Army in World War I

John was born on 24 December 1894 in East Orange, Essex, New Jersey.[1][2] He was the son of John Davies Ludlow and Eugenie Emilia Houghton (Stubbs) Ludlow.[1] In the 1900 census John (age 5) was living in Neptune, Monmouth, New Jersey.[3] Prior to the 1910 census the family moved to Rutherford, Bergen County, New Jersey, where he was a schoolboy.[4] He was a clerical worker, working for the Erie Railroad Company in New York City in 1917.[2] He was a tall, slender man, with gray eyes and blond hair.[2]

By the 1930's John was now the proprietor of a stock brokerage firm,, J.A. Ludlow & Company, in New York City, and a married man with two children.[5][6][7][8] He served as president of his company for 40 years until he retired in 1975.[8] He also had been governor of the American Stock Exchange and served as the chairman of its gratuity committee.[8] He was the mayor of the Village of Saltaire on Fire Island, New York betweeen 1950 and 1958.[8] He was also a trustee there and a commodore of the Saltaire Yacht Club.[8]

John registered for the draft in 1917 in his hometown of Essex, New Jersey.[2] According to his obituary, he actually served during World War I.[8][9] He registered again in 1942 from Essex, New Jersey, age: 48.[10]

He married Louise S. Schlachter in October 1980 in Montclair, New Jersey.[11]

John died at the age of 95 on 4 July 1990. In Montclaire, Essex, New Jersey.[12] He had been a vestryman and senior warden of the St. james Episcopal Church in Upper Montclaire and a member of the Montclaire Gold Club in West Orange and the Dunworkin Club of Montclair.[8] He was survived by his wife, a daughter, a son, 10 grandchildren, and 9 great-grandchildren.[8]
