Biography

Helene was born in 1918 in Pembroke, New York to Joshua and Ioanthe Vandermark Ludwig.[1][2] Her family ended up in Pennsylvania where she attended Forty Fort High School.[3][2]

She married Joseph Penxa on May 21, 1937 in Philadelphia.[4][2] They also spent some time in Baltimore, Maryland where Joseph worked at an aircraft plant.[5] Helene and Joseph had two sons and two daughters.[2]

Her brother Eugene, who had also ended up in Baltimore, was killed in action in France in December 1944.[6] By this point Joshua was no longer part of the family - none of the notices posted for Eugene's death mention him. He died in Mississippi in 1969.[7] Her mother died in the Washington/Baltimore area in 1948.

At some point Helene and Joseph returned to Pennsylvania where they spent the rest of their lives. Helene was an award winning quilter and a member of the Alderson Methodist Church in Harveys Lake, Pennsylvania.[2]

She died on January 6, 2013 in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania.[2]
