Based on the date and location of Sarah Baker's first marriage (1614 in Boxted), she was probably born sometime in 1586-1596 in or near Boxted, Essex, England. It is reasonably likely that she was the "Sarae Baker", daughter of Thomas Baker, who was baptized in Boxted on 4 September 1586,[1][2] as that is the only baptismal record that has been found for a Sarah Baker (or variant spellings thereof) baptized in or near Boxted in 1580-1600. A will made by a Margaret Baker of Boxted, widow, sometime in 1602-1612 contains bequests to her daughters Margaret and Sarie. It is possible that the Sarie mentioned in the will was this profile's Sarah Baker and thus that Sarah's mother was the Margaret Baker of Boxted, widow, who made the will.
As discussed in the profile for Unknown (Baker) Warner, Sarah was probably the sister of the wife of William Warren, who emigrated from Boxted, England to Ipswich, New England sometime in 1635-1637.
Sarah married Richard Lumkyne/Lumpkin at Boxted on 20 October 1614.[3][4] Sarah and Richard emigrated to New England about 1637, settling in Ipswich, Massachusetts.[4] Richard died in 1642 and his inventory was taken on 23 November that year.[5]
At an Essex County Quarterly Court held at Ipswich on 30 September 1651, Sarah Lumpkin was made administrator of the estate of her "kinswoman" Sarah Baker of Ipswich.[6][7] Sarah had still not remarried as of 24 June 1654, as the inventory of the estate of Daniel Rolfe of Ipswich, taken on that date, included 3s due to Goodwife Lumkin.[8][9]
Sarah married, second, as his second wife, Deacon Simon Stone,[4] who had migrated to New England, aged 50, on the Increase in 1635, with his first wife Joane, aged 38, and their five children.[10] Simon Stone's first wife, Joane died sometime before 1654, having had at least seven children.[4] Sarah's marriage to Simon occurred before 10 January 1654/5, as on that date Sarah Stone, wife to Deacon Stone of Wattertown, entered into a covenant with Daniel Warner for:
“the house lott…being two acres with all the housing…together with her six acre planting lott and her farme at the pine swamp containing by estimation one hundred and fifty acres of upland and meddow” in return for which “Daniel Warner doth…promise…that the Said Sarah Stone and her husband shall have the pasture…they themselves to dwell in…as long as they both shall live, with a mayd servant, …it being…agreed upon that the said Daniel shall forthwith build a good and sufficient house upon the sd house lott…and promise…to pay for all ye premises aforesaid the annual and yearly rent of foure pounds in good merchantable wheat, barley & Indian corne…unto Sarah Stone during…life and three pounds a year…during their lives….”[11]
Sarah had no children with either of her husbands.
Sarah made her will on 25 March 1663, which says:
I, Sarah Stone, wife of Simon Stone of Watertown in New England, and the relict of Richard Lumpkin, deceased, sometime of Boxstead in the County of Essex, England, and last of Ipswich in New England, make this last will, etc. The marriage covenant made with my husband Simon Stone to be made good to him and I give to him £30 above what I am engaged, to be abated of what he owes me. Whereas my late husband Richard Lumkin, deceased, did will to his friends £160, my will is that the same be honestly paid. To my kinsman [nephew] John Warner £60 in goods, and the residue of my estate to be equally divided among my kinsmen [nephews] John Warner and Daniel Warner and Thomas Wells. Rev. William Hubbard, minister at Ipswich, and Thomas Bishop to be overseers, and my kinsmen John Warner, Daniel Warner and Thomas Wells to be executors. Witnesses: Samuel Hosier, Nathaniel Green. (Middlesex County Probate Records, vol. 2, p. 228.)[4]
Sarah's will was proved 6 October 1663, which means that she died sometime between 25 March 1663 (when she made her will) and 6 October 1663.[4]
Sarah's second husband, Deacon Simon Stone, survived her by two years.[12]
