Biography

Lydia (Lansford) Owen was a Virginia colonist.

There are no original source documents to tell us when/where Lydia was born. ^[1] Autosomal DNA evidence indicates a high probability that Lydia was the daughter or granddaughter of William Lunsford who was a direct descendant of Sir Thomas Lunsford. No DNA evidence can be found that Lydia was the daughter of Isham or Hum Lunsford ^[2]

No original 17th century document and no valid evidence can be found to directly or circumstantially connect Lydia with the name of a parent. Unsourced online trees of recent origin are NOT evidence.

Lydia married William Owens after (perhaps years after) 1 Oct 1703. We know William Owens was unmarried on that date because he transferred his deed for 100 acres in Henrico County, VA to John Woodson ^[3] No wife signed the transfer as would have been required by law had he been married. Lydia died after 6 Aug 1745 when she and her husband signed a deed transfer witnessed by their son-in-law William Adkins^[4] Lydia had apparently died by 20 MAR 1746/47 when her name was not on a deed transfer by her husband to their son-in-law, William Adkins^[5]In all likelihood, she died in Goochland County, Virginia

Marriage to William Owens sometime after 1 Oct 1703 probably in Henrico County, Virginia^[6]Her future husband appeared as a single man on a land deed dated 1 Oct 1703.^[3]

Virgil Owens Jr.

I can find no evidence that Brooke was ever part of her name. This mistaken notion seems to have come about when someone confused her with the 1st wife of William Owens. According to the 1911 book Historical Sketches of the Campbell, Pilcher, and Related Families (online at Ancestry.com), her husbands 1st wife was a Miss (first name unknown) Brookes, the sister of Elizabeth Brookes who married Williams brother Thomas Owen. Miss Brookes and her sister Elizabeth were both daughters of Thomas Brookes and his 1st wife Susannah Wyatt.

Lydia, 2nd wife of William Owens, had no connection whatsoever with the Brookes family or with Miss Brookes, who was William's 1st wife.

Milton Davis III

Lansford-40 and Lunsford-82 appear to represent the same person because: Need discussion on the last name. Lunsfords were an old English line from the 14th century. The first Lansfords began appearing in the U.S.

around 1675, probably an Americanization. We have one of each for some of these profiles. This is one of them. I suggest we use Lansford for them all with an aka of Lunsford on each?

Virgil Owens Jr.

No 17th or 18th-century records can be found to give us her maiden surname. However, nine of us who are her proven descendants have a significant number of DNA matches to descendants of Sir Thomas Lunsford. So, it appears that Lunsford is correct. Lansford should not even appear as an aka because no original source records with the Lansford spelling can be found for Lydia.
