Biography

John was the son of Hugh Luttrell[1] and Katherine Beaumont. He was born in the period 1394-1398: Inquisitions Post Mortem for his father differ as to his age at his father's death in 1428, giving ages of 30, 34 and 48, and the last of these is probably a mis-recording. His father had lands and interests in a number of counties, and his birth place is uncertain. He was his father's main heir.[2][3]

No later than 1422 John married Margaret Tuchet, daughter of Sir John Tuchet, 4th Lord Audley,[1] and Elizabeth Stafford.[2][3] They had 2 sons:

In 1416 John and his father were on a commission of array.[4] John accompanied his father to fight in France in 1417, but household accounts show that in the following few years he was in Somerset for at least part of the time, looking after his father's affairs in England.[5]

In 1422 John and his father were granted an annuity by the crown for a religious foundation near Porlock, Somerset.[4]

In June 1429 John referred to himself as Esquire; in March 1430, he described himself as Knight.[5]

In 1430 John was a Commissioner of the Peace for Dorset and Somerset.[4]

John died on 30 June 1430. His heir was his son James.[2][3][6] Writs for his Inquisitions Post Mortem were issued on 28 August 1430, and record him having held lands in Devon, Dorset, Somerset and Suffolk.[6] He was probably buried at the Augustinian Priory of Bruton, Somerset, of which he was a benefactor: records of burial expenses are preserved in the Priory's accounts, along with expenses for "holding the anniversary of Sir John Luttrell, knight, there on the 6th day of August in the ninth year of King Henry the Sixth [6 August 1431]."[5]

John's widow married again, her second husband being Robert Coker.[2][3]

Research Notes

John has previously been shown on WikiTree as having married Joan Mallet as his first wife in or before 1422. There is no good source for this. According to the History of Parliament Online, Joan married (as her second husband) a different John Luttrell, son of Richard Luttrell.[7]

Weaver's edition of the Somerset Visitations has a muddled pedigree for the Luttrell family, and is not reliable on it.[8]

This profile was re-reviewed for the Magna Carta project by Michael Cayley on 17 January 2022.
John appears in Magna Carta Ancestry in a Richardson-documented trail from Gateway Ancestor Percival Lowell to Magna Carta Surety Baron Robert de Vere (vol. III, pages 60-64 LOWELL). This trail, as well as another trail to surety baron Saher de Quincy, have been re-reviewed, finishing in January 2022. The trails are set out in the Magna Carta Trails section of Christian Percival's profile.
See Base Camp for more information about Magna Carta trails. See the project's glossary for project-specific terms, such as a "badged trail".
