Biography

William Lygon (aka Ligon), son and heir of Richard Lygon and his first wife, Margaret Greville, was born about 1512 (aged 44 in 1556,[1][2] at his father's death).[3]

Marriage and Children

William married Eleanor Dennis, daughter of Sir William Dennis of Dyrham, Gloucestershire, by his first wife, Anne, daughter of Maurice Berkeley, Knt.[4][5] by contract dated 1529.[1][6]
They had seven sons and four daughters:
  • William,[1] the younger, received seisin when his father acquired the land of Thomas Staple at Madresfield in 1557, was presumably the eldest son, left a will naming a wife, Katherine[3]
  • Richard, Esq.,[1][4] aged 30 and more at his father's death, married twice, first to Mary Russell and second to Margaret Talbot[3]
  • Ferdinando,[1] witnessed a deed in 1555, was living at Arle in 1568[3]
  • Thomas, Gent., married Frances Dennis.[4][5][7] He was born about 1545,[8] 4th son, and died in August 1603.[1]
  • Ralph,[1][4] involved in the Duke of Norfolk's plot in 1572 and after that, lived "beyond the seas"; living on 29 April 1606[3]
  • Hugh,[1][4] graduated Oxford 1570, married first Elizabeth ____, second to Barbara Foliot, his will was dated 26 May 1599 at Hanley Castle, Worcester[9]
  • Francis,[1][4] youngest son, will dated 12 November 1601, married Grace Bub and had issue[10]
  • Margaret, wife of Sir Thomas Russell and Sir Henry Berkeley,[1][4][5][8] she died 1617[10]
  • Cecily, wife of Edward Gorges, Esq.[5][8][10] (unnamed wife of Gorges per Smyth)[4] and John Vivian, Esq.[1]
  • Katherine, wife of Thomas Foliot,[1][5][8][10] (called Elizabeth by Smyth)[4]
  • Elizabeth, wife of William Norwood,[5][7] (called Eleanor by Smyth),[4] was born about 1548 and died 16 April 1598[1]

Lands and Positions

William Ligon possessed the following estates in England:
  • Madresfield, Redgrove, and Lower Mitton, Worcestershire[1]
  • Arle Court (in Cheltenham, from his wife),[8] Elmstone (in Elmstone Hardwicke), Kemerton, and Staverton, Gloucestershire[1]
He was one of the justices of the Hundred of Cheltenham (unknown date).[3]
In 1544 he was serving in the army in France,[1] and is shown in the Vanguard with 10 foot, when Henry VIII invaded France and captured Boulogne.[3]
Sheriff of Worcestershire, 1550-1551[1] and 1560-1561.[3]

Death and Burial

William Ligon died at Madresfield, Worcestershire on 29 September 1567. His widow was living at Arle in 1568[3] and died between 1579 and 2 March 1585/6,[1] when administration of her intestate estate was granted to her sons Thomas, Hugh and Francis.[6]
Richardson and Faris state that William was buried at Austin Friars, London,[1][8] but another source say that he was buried on 2 October 1567 in the church ("in the high chancel") at Great Malvern, Worcestershire.[6]
William left a will dated 22 August 1567 and proved 12 August 1568 that named his eldest son Richard as executor and left him most of the family lands. Thomas was named in the remainder, after Richard's heirs male. William did not mention his three younger sons, his three married daughters, or his wife in his will.[6]

* British History online: Matson [1] " Richard Lygon, who was knighted in 1533, died seised of the manor of Matson in 1557, but in 1552 his son and heir William had granted a lease of part, including the site of the manor, for 50 years to John Robins. William Lygon died in 1567 and was succeeded by his son Richard"

In celebration of the 800th Anniversary of the Magna Carta, the Magna Carta Project is reviewing and enhancing all the profiles between Magna Carta Sureties and Gateway Ancestors. A. Tompkins and I are doing what we can to enhance the trail between Henry de Bohun and Henry Norwood. We appreciate all the work that has already been done to this profile and look forward to any additional contributions we can make to it.

The info we have on WikiTree is up-to-date with more contemporary sources (published in 2010's) that corrected the errors in Vol I of Ligon Family and Connections. The info you added above, from Vol 2 (published 1952), is available online here. See the Gateway's profile HERE for a list of profiles in the trail from Thomas Ligon to surety baron Henry Bohun. Look HERE for trails to Huntingfield, de Vere, Malet and Quincy. The Magna Carta project's policy is to trace on line from each Gateway to one surety. Thanks for pointing out the others.
