Jabez was born in 1773 in Massachussetts, and came to Upper Canada some time before the War of 1812, settling in Whitby Township, east of York.
On July 31, 1810, Jabez Lyndes, a yeoman of Whitby Twp., made a land petition. He had purchased Lot 31, Con. 2, Whitby from Mr. Russell and wanted a lease on Lot 30 beside it. Jordan Post, a watchmaker in York, would provide surety. The lease was recommended but rescinded in 1816. [1]
During the War of 1812, Jabez served in the 3rd York Militia. In August, 1812, he served in Lieut. Ely Playter’s Whitby Co. [2]
In 1813, he was a Private in a dispatch cavalry company in the 3rd Regiment of the York Militia, responsible for running dispatches between York and Kingston. His company had no officers of its own, reporting directly to William Allan, Commanding Officer of the 3rd Regiment.[3]
Jabez Lynde of Whitby Township kept an inn on the route between York and Kingston. In April, 1813, after the capture of the Town of York by the Americans, Brigadier General Sheaffe and his army retreating to Kingston, stopped at the inn and plundered it for supplies. After the war, Jabez made a war loss claim for 18 gallons of rum, 300 pounds of pork, 140 pounds of smoked ham, 60 pounds of cheese, a canister of tea, 4 shirts, a pair of pantaloons, a vest, a hat, a new great coat, 2 handkerchiefs, a blanket, a silver watch, a gold necklace, 6 silver teaspoons, a set of knives and forks, silver sugar tongs, 4 decanters, 3 bottles, a keg, a table cloth, and a towel.
Doctors Lee and Powell had asked Jabez if he had spirits in the house and when he told them that he had the rum, they asked him to keep it for the wounded soldiers. However shortly after the doctors left, a party of 8th Regiment soldiers raided the inn and took the above articles by force. Hawkins W. Lynde certified his father’s war loss claim. [4]
From at least as early as January 1814 until early in 1815, his unit was no longer considered part of the 3rd Regiment. He was regularly on Muster Rolls and Pay Lists for a small company called the "Kingston Road Detachment of the Home District Militia Cavalry for carrying dispatches".[5] They reported to Lt. Thomas Taylor, an officer in the British Army and the Post Major at Fort York. Jabez is listed as one of four Privates stationed in Whitby, along with David Annis.. There were also two Privates stationed in Pickering, including his brother in law, Noadiah Woodruff and four Privates stationed in Scarborough, including Stephen Pherrill.
Jabez and Clarissa Lynde's house is now a museum, the Lynde House Museum, in Whitby, Ontario. A photo of the house taken in 1904 can be seen here.
Jabez passed away in 1856.
