Biography

Men with the same name & often mixed up

There are at least three different Alexander Lyons who are being mixed up.
Alexander Lyon of Culpepper VA/Wilkes NC
There is an Alexander Lyon of Culpepper,VA who was married to an Elizabeth. He was born @1730 and seems to have died about 1787-1790 in Wilkes County, NC.
Y-DNA Haplogroup: I1-P109
Possible children are:
1. William S. LYON, b. 17 Feb 1752
2. John LYON, b. ca. 1762
3. Jacob LYON I, b. 1763
4. Isabell LYON, b. 1760-65, VA
On a 1783 tax list for Culpeper Co., VA, we find a William LYON, and an Alexander LYON with son, Jacob LYON. All three next appear together in the 1787 state census of Wilkes Co., NC. It certainly appears that the father of William and Jacob is alive in 1787 and, like his sons, living in Wilkes County.

Alexander Lyon of Culpepper/Amherst VA
There is an Alexander Lyon who married Judith Hill in Amherst, VA. This Alexander Lyon was born no earlier than 1765 (1764 if his birthday was after October 7th).
Proof of his age comes from the 7 Oct 1786 Amherst Co., VA, marriage bond of Alexander LYON & Judith Hill which states that Alexander's father, William LYON of Culpeper VA, "gives consent" for the marriage.
Alexander would only have needed consent to marry if he was under the age of 21 in 1786.
Many secondary files show Alexander Lyon & Judith Hill as the parents of the Hannah LYON born in 1760. Judith cannot be her mother because she wasn't married to Alexander Lyon until 1786. Nor can it be the case that Judith is Alexander's second wife as this Alexander Lyon was under the age of 21 when he married Judith Hill - so he could not have been married previously.

Alexander Lyons of Caswell, NC
There is a third Alexander Lyons who died in Caswell County, NC in 1785.
Y-DNA Haplogroup: I2-L1498
This means that the Alexander Lyon of Wilkes, NC is not the same as the Alexander Lyons of Caswell, NC as as the Alexander of Wilkes was alive in 1787.
In addition the Caswell Lyons Y-DNA Haplogroup does not match the DNA of the Culpepper Lyon.
It also means the Alexander Lyons of Caswell is not the same as the Amherst Alexander Lyon as the Caswell Lyon died before the Amherst Lyon was married.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Alexander by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Alexander:

I have proposed merges for Alexander Lyon's Profile (Lyon-7027) Alexander Lyon's Profile (Lyon-1268)

also Alexander Lyon's Profile (Lyons-8926) Alexander Lyons's Profile (Lyons-1321) all the same person

Lyon-7027 and Lyon-1268 appear to represent the same person because: Same person, dates and son

Hey guys, new to the Lyon train and trying to get this all straight. so I can figure out which one is my correct ancestor. So we have 3 Alexander Lyon(s), 2 from Culpepper, two that ended in similar locations in NC, and I have 2 with Maiden names of Hill or Elizabeth and Judith combined into a first and middle name. Not complicated at all... I am looking for the correct father and mother for Isabell. Any documentation or birth records for any of these people?

Lyons-1321 and Lyon-1268 do not represent the same person because: Apparently these are frequently mixed up but are from two different haplogroups. See documentation on both.

Lyons-1321 and Lyon-1268 appear to represent the same person because: Same name, same DOB, same place of birth, same general date of death and place of death. Both profiles mention Judith Hill.

Alexander was not married twice. The Alexander Lyon that married Judith Hill required his father's consent to marry. Therefore, he was born no earlier than 1765 - which means they are not the same people. It is not the same person who married Elizabeth Osbourne as he wouldn't have even been born.

Alexander was married twice. 1) Elizabeth Osbourne about 1751 to some time before 1786. she died in 1786. They had 4 children: Jacob b 1763, william s b1752, john b 1767, susana b 1765.

2) Judith hill in 1786. They had 1 child susanah b 1788. all children were born in or around Roanoak/Culppeper, Virginia.
